Hi gang! A little over 18 months ago I saw running as a lunatic occupation for sweaty nut jobs. They just needed some 'friendly' advice shouted at them from my car window whilst I drove the he quarter mile or so to the chip shop, perhaps they would see the error of their ways. Well a reality check in the form of a ticking off from my local gp led to a year of lifestyle modification (is that phrase modern BS?!) and weight loss. The BBC sponsored One You version of C25K sat on my phone for almost a year, filed under 'seemed like a good idea at the time' until one morning I spotted a very sweaty but determined looking lady running. I didn't laugh or scoff, I remembered the app and thought why not?!
That was in June this year, I graduated C25K on 11th August (I've decided that will be my running birthday! π) and now ladies and gentlemen, to the point of these ramblings!, this morning I ran 10km! π΅4 months after taking up running I'm pleased to be a member of the sweaty lunatic fraternity! π
For the record the time was 1:15.01 which isn't too shabby either!

Well done - that is my next step! Quite comfortable with 6-7k per run at the moment I just need to allocate the additional time (not sure it will be as quick as you though).
Thank you! I did a couple of sub 30 min 5K Parkruns but knew I'd kill myself trying that pace for anything longer distance. The time I did was an easier pace and felt good, it's a case of finding what's best and sensible (ish!)
Aah rumbled! π I've asked for it, hopefully see the new bling soon. I've entered a half marathon for mid April 2018, let's see if that daunting affair keeps the smile on my face π
Brilliant job!!! And in such a short time too! I could never see the point in all that running and sweating and effort either. But now I feel a whole lot fitter, I get it! Keep going, half marathon next!!ππππ
Thank you! I'm amazed at how quickly I've reached this point, all sensible too and no injuries (yet!). I have entered a half marathon for April so we'll see if that's too soon, I'll train in my own way and see how that goes βΊπ
Cor, that's pretty damn good! Lovely to hear how you started out running, too. I graduated today, and still have a lot of work to do in terms of consolidation, but the idea of 10k eventually is attractive. If you had told me 9 weeks ago that I would have even been entertaining this thought I would have snorted my cup of tea out of my nose! Who am I?! I don't even know any more!
Well done on your 10k. May you have a lifetime of happy runs!
Thank you and big congrats on your graduation, that's an awesome achievement. I reckon there are many people like us trying to work out what happened to our former selves! π π
Thank you mam! I tend to be a bit of a bull in a China shop and have to remind myself that it's almost literally a marathon not a sprint sometimes, that said I was very pleased with that time today.
My running life might not have taken off at all if it wasn't for you and one or two others on these forums whose advice I still remember when I'm pounding the pre dawn streets. To you especially, thank you π
Thank you! I'll make sure that my Runniversary is nailed to the calendar from now on! π
That's fantastic ! Congrats on a great time. Not shabby at all!πππ.
I have achieved 2x 10k so far and knocked 8 mins off second one. However the time was no where near as good as yours! It was 91mins.
My aim is to get my time down to about 80 mins, So this week I'm off ,not working until next weekend so I'm going to have a go at it. I know that I wouldn't be able to achieve such a fantastic time as yours so I'll be happy with knocking off some more mins whatever amount that will be.
Thanks Peggy! The beauty of this site is how inclusive and genuine it is. In experience terms you're ahead of me but asking for my advice which is humbling to say the least π
I've always aimed at following the path of least resistance but trying to achieve the best results from it if that makes sense?! The times I have achieved have been the result of lots of steady runs which have built up my stamina, the pace imperceptibly increases. Whatever you're comfortable with should be enough, your times are excellent, I can't imagine knocking 8 minutes off mine!
Thank you so much lardofale for your kind words that means a lot. I think sometimes I am a bit hard on myself and often think that I could do better each time. However I have to remember that first I am reaching the big 60 in Feb, so I must be satisfied with what I can achieve and second stop comparing myself with younger runners who are like whippets! hee! hee!
I used to run all the time when I was in the army which was in the 80's so that was then and this is now so I think it's time to just go with it.
So I shall carry on with steady runs and see what happens and like you have said just do steady runs and whatever's comfortable.
I always try to run 3 times a week with 2 small runs and one long run. Sometimes that does not always work.
Anyhow ! I digress ,thank you once again for your kind words and great adviceππ
