Hi gang, I've posted a fair number of things over on the C25K side but not crossed to road to visit the bridge to 10k folks until now. I graduated C25K in mid August and have subsequently been following my own path of Parkruns, 5k runs and gradually stretching the distance once a week, so far to just over 7k. I haven't used any new apps or podcasts, just enjoyed listening to my music or audiobooks whilst pounding the early morning dark North Suffolk streets. I'm surprised at how much easier it appears to be to run for more than 5k and for 40 minutes+! My enthusiasm must be growing on people as even my wife and brother have taken up running, not something I ever thought I'd see (especially my brother!)
I'm aiming at getting to 10k sometime in the next month and was wondering if just doing 10k is sufficient to graduate here or if I have to follow a particular recommended app/podcast?

No special programme, just run 10K and claim your badge π It sounds as if you won't be far off and then you'll need to post another "Oscar speech" πππ
Well done for keeping running after graduation as I really think that's hard for so many people for so many reasons. And another well done for passing on the love to your wife and brother πππ
Welcome to the other side lardofale . There are quite a few of us that inhabit both forums. And thee are many different ways of bridging that gap to 10k. I used the Sami Murphy podcasts as I was missing Laura and needed a substitute to keep me on the straight and narrow.
Whatever you do doesn't matter but listen to your body and don't overdo it. I ended up with a problematic Achilles' tendon and was on the injury Couch for what seemed like forever. I completely lost my Mojo, couldn't face the forums and went dead quiet in running terms. I slowly eased back into running and in here, and am back to loving it. I got my 10k graduation a few weeks ago and managed to complete my first official 10k race at the end of September.
It'll be great to see how you progress. One of my challenges is to keep myself distracted from the gremlins and the distance which is why I mess around with music in my head.
Thank you for the advice! Nice to see familiar people on this side! I'm relatively sensible (despite what the wife might say!) and will ease myself towards the target. So far, in 20 weeks or so of running & without wishing to jinx myself, I've not suffered any injuries and that's mostly down to following the advice and handy tips from my fellow runners.
My next run is a steady 5K then back to increased distance next week.
Well done on achieving your graduation and the race, awesome!
Thank you. I've always liked to try my own thing but also take on-board advice from others and adapt if necessary.
I'm delighted that my wife is now up to week 4 of C25K but totally blown away by my brother who has also reached that stage. His tale will be something to tell if I can get him onto the forum!
10k seemed like a pipe dream only 4 months ago, well 5k did too to be honest, but it's getting close and I'm sure the yell of triumph will rival that of the Spartans!!
Heyyyyy! There you are! Welcome to the forum. There are lots of names here you will recognise, but also many very very experienced runners whose brains we can pick as we continue our journey!
Do your first10k and claim that shiny badge, looks like beingvery soon πππ»
Heyyyyy back! Thanks for that, I've already spotted a few and read plenty! Lots of advice to help me on my sweaty way! I'm hoping to get up to 10k in 2 weeks time, I'm off work for a week (kiddies half term) so will have a bit more time to have a go and see if I can grab that shiny badge!
As her Majesty, Irishprincess says... no special deal here
Just... slow and steady.....( ha ha.. you thought you had escaped me didn't you?) ... progression
There are quite a few familiar faces here..but remember, any secrets you read in our posts....( mine) about me liking to run quickly, you must never divulge to the other forum ! I would never live it down
You are going to do just fine.. I did loads of different things before heading here and then built up steadily to the 7K and then eventually 10K and have done one 10K Virtual Race for Charity. I tried a weird app, but then used Sami Murphy, as did many of us
Welcome...keep posting and ask anything you like. I learned and continue to learn so much from the awesome folk on here...
Welcome to the forum. Lots of familiar 'faces' here, I'm sure! Sounds like it is going well to meπ. I bridged to 10k the same way as you - by just extending one of my three runs (my weekly 'long run') and sticking to the 10% rule.
Really fantastic that your wife and brother are now running too - always good to have others to talk about running to!π
Thank you Sandraj39 I hit on the idea as an experiment, glad to see I'm not alone with it!
I'm blown away by my brother especially taking this on, his physical presence doesn't lend itself to the look of a natural athlete but he's determined. My wife is nervous that I'm getting too fit, light & desirable!! So she thought she'd steal my thunder! π
Good luck with increasing your running distance within a nice safe timescale. I totally agree that once you get the first 30 to 40 mins done the running feels much easier, legs looser and breathing relaxed...
Im currently on a 10k plan too, a bit behind you as have four more weeks to go.. go you and I will watch your progress πx
Hi Jan, nice to see you here too! I'm never one to rush into stuff so I'm happy to take my time, having said that I'm planning to have a crack at it in a couple of weeks π I'll post plenty on here I'm sure βΊ
Welcome! Well done on recruiting your wife and brother to the cause! My wife and kids still look at me like I'm crazy when I go out running. My wife can't run due to problematic knees, but she walks further than anyone I know. I also noticed a real difference as your body adjusts to the longer distances they seem easier. Not always - but over time Best of luck in your running!!
Thanks mate! Even though my wife is onboard she still looks at me like I'm crazy, mind you I'm out the door just after 5am! My legs have changed noticeably and my lungs are recovering much quicker than before so I guess the regular 5k is helping, my stamina is very much increased too. I'm not going to get too impatient though, it's taken me 47 years to get to this stage....!
I cannot imagine running 10k, but then again, I never thought Iβd run 5k!!! So thereβs hope for me yet..this is a fab post, I feel hopeful reading it....good for you for your inspiration both on here & in your day to day life....great that youβve got your family at it!!!! Iβve only posted once on the other side....!!!
Given that neither of us were even willing to tie up the laces on our trainers a few months ago I think it's been an incredible achievement! Now you've got over those little jitters post graduation I reckon you'll be getting towards 10k at some point ;0)
My brother has just started week 4, the wife has a back injury at the moment (chasing a 3 year old daughter strain!!) but is at the same point. Hugely pleased if I can inspire them and others, the C25K programme is amazing. The incremental time build up serves well for post graduation and a go at the challenge on this side of the forum fence!
Welcome and good to see you here.... there are no specific rules about graduating here, just that you got to 10k... if you would like a plan, I did a 6 week programme which I will be repeating in December. The Ones I did before are all pinned, and this is the first:
Thank you, it's a pleasure to be here! I never thought I'd get to the point where I could seriously contemplate 10k so it's great to get tips and advice on this side from familiar names and 'old heads' (old heads meant as a compliment!!)
The main thing I've taken out of the C25K programme is the incremental build up in time. Once I'd managed 3 x 30 minute runs I knew that I was mentally conditioned to believe that I could manage more. With that in mind I just moved straight to 5k and found that I was at the 34 minute mark immediately so time wasn't an issue. The longer distances I'm at now are taking about 50 minutes, 10k would be around 65 to 70 minutes at my current rate. Plenty to work on but getting there!
