Anastrozole and Adcal-D3 - hypothyroidism and hormone positive breast cancer

I have been prescribed Adcal- D3 as the medication I have been prescribed for breast cancer has been known to cause osteoporosis. (Anastrozole).

I have several questions:

1. Adcal-D3 contains soy oil - I thought soy contained plant oestrogen which was similar to human? Is it safe to take given my oncologist has stopped my HRT and refused me vaginal oestrogen which has a very low dose of oestrogen but is deemed too risky?

2. I have hypothyroidism, I understood that I should avoid soy - is that correct?

3. I was not advised to take any co factors with the Adcal-D3 eg Vitamin K, magnesium.

I was taking Dr Best vit D3 5000IU and K-pearls K2 MK7 - is it safe to continue them with Adcal-D3 ?

Many thanks for any pointers.

I was prescribed Accrette - calcium and vitamin D to begin with, it didn’t agree with me. I was then prescribed Ad-Cal which tasted better but still upset my gut. I had a consultation with the osteoporosis nurse and we decided I was probably getting enough calcium from my diet. So now I buy my own Vitamin D3 and take that - I vary between 1000IU and 3000IU depending on my levels (I do my own fingerpick tests ) I’ve since found marine calcium so I take one capsule daily just to be sure I’m getting enough, it also has trace elements if other minerals.

I mentioned K2 and my osteoporosis nurse hadn’t heard of taking that - so I take that. I take magnesium, boron, omega 3 DHA oil capsules - again derived from marine sources - think that’s about it.

I found the ROS calcium rich food list useful - theros.org.uk/information-a... and choose lots of foods from there plus I don’t eat processed foods or drink Coca Cola or other fizzy drinks, I don’t drink alcohol but only because I d9nt love it - I’d rather have a cup of tea or coffee and I don’t smoke.

From what I’ve seen on the Thyroid U.K. site soy isn’t recommended for people who are hypo, i don’t know for sure because I had Graves’ disease so I was hyperactive - I’m in remission now.

Hope that helps.

Should add I’ve got a friend who took anastrazole following breast cancer, she used to do a lot of ‘stomping’ on the ground as well as being careful to eat good quality food and at her most recent DEXA - seems it’s easier to get one through oncology where we live - her bones were fine.

Thank you so much for replying it is very much appreciated. I will take a good look at the recommended foods. I have what I would consider a good diet (good quality, cook most things and very little processed). I know I need to probably exercise more than I currently do, which will help hopefully with bone density. Thanks again 😊

Hi, I am looking to up my calcium level too. Can I please ask what brand of marine calcium you are taking?

Hi. I can't speak for the rest of it but for hypothyroidism I wouldn't worry too much about the soy. As I understand it there isn't much evidence supporting the widely repeated trope that hypos should avoid soya, but in any case, the quantities you'd be taking will be small if it's limited to the tablet. I even eat soya from time to time. However, it's probably best to separate the times when you take your thyroxine and anything with soya as it may limit the absorption of your thyroxine. Hope that helps.

Thanks CloudyD. I think I may just continue my own vitamin regime and avoid the Adcal-D3. I will be hopefully /eventually be having a Dexa scan which would pick up issues should I have them ? 😊

It sounds like you have to do a lot of self research and medical planning which I am sorry we are all so much the main planner of our medical care.

I used Intrarosa vaginals inserts which have no estrogen . With manufactures coupon it cost $80 American dollars per two month supply but I only used it sometimes making a box last 6 months.

I was born in 63 so we are close in age.

I avoid soy only bc it bothers my stomach.

I finally joined a gym but what I don’t understand is if I don’t do high weight loading then I cannot build bone?

The astronauts after space I believe did not go on bone building medicine or shots but does anyone here know?

I just heard yesterday on the Dr Hyman osteoporosis YouTube video that someone improved bone density by doing bikram yoga every day.

I want to build bone not just stop bone loss. Supposedly medicines and shots often bring a landslide of side effects according to everyone and also Dr. Osborne YouTube video.

I would do anything to help build bone loss. Something is telling me to pick up horse back riding hobby to build bone and muscle.

I do the supplements but I am headed toward medicine/ shots. I am very concerned bc I could be losing bone by the day according to my pharmacist or at least not stopping or ideally gaining bone. I don’t want brittle bone - I want to build soft bone . Idk what to do.

Thank you for your reply and pointers. I’m going to try and increase the amount of walking and swimming I do , and although I attend a weekly Pilates class I will try to practice on my own a few more days a week and use bands/weights. I’m not a gym person - it makes me miserable 😂 - I will chose quality of life over quantity- carrying shopping bags and gardening tools etc is my weight bearing exercise.

Eating healthy - very little processed food and not putting weight on will hopefully all help. 😊

I definitely would think twice about horse riding. The possibility of falling off means that sadly I’ve decided my days of riding are over - even the most placid horse can get a fright and toss you off.

Besides I was brought up riding horses as was my aunt who also had osteoporosis so I’m not sure horse riding did much for either of us - although she smoked and liked a glass of whiskey which I have never done.

Have you looked into low density vibration plates - would probably be less temperamental than a horse although you can’t stroke or talk to one.

My horse riding days are over too 😊

If I horse back rode I would only be doing low level beginner rides. As to your aunt the alcohol and cigarettes would be hard on the bones but often genetics is the whole cause. In my case it’s genetics plus lifestyle . . I did look into vibration plates . . . And price and g force and hertz - the best option is lifepro waver but someone I know said reviews say those break quickly with no refund.

I’d still worry that I’d get thrown off, even the most bomb proof horses can get upset and much as I’d love to I’m not sure bouncing around on my recently fractured sacrum would be the best idea - I’ll stick to patting any horses that I meet. 🐴

Investigate AlgaeCal. Not available on NHS but having significant results with members on here & elsewhere.I switched last year from AdCal after 9 years of stomach problems. The difference was dramatic very quickly. I now have no digestive problems & a recent MRI on spine ( for something else) showed bone regrowth.

I am due a Dexa scan later this year.

Good luck

I only take 2 capsules AlgaeCal plus with evening meal daily.

fascinating you take your calcium at dinner- I bet that’s a huge smart move bc people lose calcium / bone at night

Thanks for the U Tube video. It's always good to read/listen to all relevant advice. My surgery had never heard of AlgaeCal but removed the AdCal & added the AlgaeCal to my records.

Way back when I was first diagnosed I read about AlgaeCal and was very interested but it seemed to be an American thing plus it was expensive and I didn’t want to have to pay more pay to import it. You’ll need to keep us posted to see if you get it on the NHS.
