Hi, I have PMR and am on long term steroids, currently on 5mgs. I've just had a bone scan and have discovered that I have Osteoporosis. I'm taking a Calcium suppliment, Vitamin D3 and also as recommended on this site Magnesium and Vitamin K2.. I didn't realise that there are different types of K2 the one that I take is MK-7 from Natto extract, not sure if I should be taking K4 instead. I would be most grateful if anyone can advise me.
Thanks

Thanks so much for that. I have already started on MK7 but will change to MK4. I'm new to this and am still on a steep learning curve. Can you recommend a good MK4 supplement? MK7 is by Solgar.
I’m sorry but I believe that information is incorrect. You need mk7 not Mk4. Neither should you be taking calcium if you have a good diet and are taking 5000iu of vitamin D ( along with the cofactors magnesium, k2 and boron. I suggest you follow the read the files and follow the protocol on the Face book group “vitamin D and co factors. U.K.” some very wise and well informed people run that group.
Quite agree. Too much calcium from tablets/supplements isn’t good for us. Better to get it from our diet.lots of foods have high calcium, not just dairy either.
I agree with trishbindefeld about the MK7. MK4 is I believe synthetic and does not last long in the body therefore you need to take massive doses of it. The MK7 is derived from natto and is long lasting. I take Nutrizing 600 mcg daily with the co-factors but no calcium other than what I get in food.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my query. It's a minefield out there..... Will have a look at the facebook page and see what it says. I am too frightened to stop the Calcium supplement at the moment as I am still taking steroids and I have already refused to take Alendronic Acid. Will get back to you all.
It is a minefield and not helped at all by the NHS not understanding the importance of vitamins and minerals in our diets or how they work together or not.
I've just been led to this site as I take calcium prescribed by my Dr for osteoporosis. I take k7 which I've done after some research. I am also on 10mg steroids . I have Hashimotos. So it's a difficulty to get the right vits and minerals and to know when to take them.
I gather now that calcium is no good for me. I won't take alendronic acid.
I hope you get answers.
I believe K2 is the one that really strengthen s bone it is in certain foods just google what to eat to get heaps of k2
food is better than the pill as it is better absorbed by your body in food
lots of leafy greens is great do some weight workout very impt I like the weight vest as it is so much more fun than exercises at a stinky gym
faster and no spot workouts like first we do the legs for an hr then we do the back for another hr NO way just put on vest and go see the vest at nykweightvest.com this is made for women very cute and very inexpensive at 89.00 as compared to others at 180.00 and up
If you want to dig into very good info about K -vitamins (and other vitamins), I would recommend you to read what Chris Masterjohn, phd in Nutritional Sciences, writes. He’s got a webside (chrismasterjohnphd.com) where you can find what food to eat to get enough of the different K2’s, and the best supplements, if you need. (Stay away from synthetic ones).
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply to my query regarding the best K2 supplement to take.
I have looked at all the sites suggested by you and some of my own and the consensus seems to be that MK4 is the one you take to improve bone mass and MK7 is for heart health. I have decided to take a combined K2 supplement.
As I take Omeprazole first thing in the morning then wait an hour before taking my Pred with my breakfast I am not sure when to start taking my supplements. Information I read says I should take all of my Vitamin D3 supplement with my breakfast and my K2 with my Dinner in the evening with
Magnesium in between meals. I am struggling with this as I don't think I should be taking supplements with streroids. Also as I take a Calcium supplement, this makes things doubly difficult.
I have tried to find this information for myself but have hit a brick wall. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
