I'd like to thank everyone for the advice regarding my calcium and vitamin D supplements. I've had a chat with a pharmacist today who advised another blood test after the 7 weeks of the high dose vit D, it's ok to take the 2 per week at the same time, not to worry about magnesium yet just get the strength of vit D GP advised, I've had my next Dexa Scan appt come through for the end of this month, and since my original post I've received more info from you lovely people than I have from GP in 5 years x

Glad your vitamin D is on track, but ignore the pharmacist & look up bone health information yourself.

We need magnesium (a ratio of 1:2 with calcium), vitamin D & boron as cofactors with calcium, else the latter isn't directed to our bones, & causes atherosclerosis.

Chelated or bisglycinate is the most bioavalable form, though you might prefer transdermal spray or cream. Some seeds like chia contain boron.

Make sure to take youe supplements appropriately so they're best absorbed, & check your magnesium is a bioavailable form as the cheap stuff isn't.

Thank you is there a magnesium supplement you would recommend , I have previously been taking metabolics bisglycinate , should I be taking calcium supplement too

You're welcome!

I use chelated magnesium or magnesium bisglycinate, which I mentioned in my earlier reply.

I looked up metabolics, & it seems both expensive & padded with Mg oxide which is not bioavailable. Manufacturers & sellers aren't bothered what they peddle, so always check the ingredients rather than accept what they advertise.

If your diet is low in calcium, perhaps you need to supplement.

Both will not help produce new bone without the other cofactors.

The internet.

I initially took Solgar, but have swapped to Bulk Powders which is cheaper & I have found ok. I get cramp at night if it doesn't work, which is a quick & useful way for me to test efficacy.

I buy a calcium free mineral complex containing boron from the US, though some days I rely on chia seeds, that I take my D3 with, alongside nuts & linseeds for healthy oil to improve absorption. Some people take K2-mk7 & vitamin D3 as a combined tablet or sublingual spray. I drink kefir for K2 so don't supplement.

Many people absorb magnesium better transdermally. There's also magnesium sprays, but these are expensive & can sting. I make a milder version with magnesium chloride hexahydrate crystals & witch hazel (though boiled water would be fine). I can make a few months worth with 1kg of Mg crystals for a fraction of the cost of one commercial spray.

If you like taking baths, soaking for 30 minutes in a bath with 500g of Mg crystals or epsom salts is another alternative.

Not what you're looking for?
