Hi, this is my story

I broke my foot following a fall off a high kerb in August 2021 and should have been referred for a DEXA scan by the minor injuries unit who treated this, but wasn't until I asked my GP for one, following a tip off from a friend who knew that that is NHS guidance. Following the DEXA scan and recommendation from the radiologist, I was told by my GP that I had Osteoporosis (no comment about how badly, despite me asking!) and prescribed Alendronic Acid and Calcium +Vit D. I researched the condition and discovered that Vitamin K plays an important role in bone health as it is responsible for converting the bone protein osteocalcin from its inactive form to its active form. Osteocalcin is the major non-collagen protein found in our bones that anchors calcium into place within the bone. But not all types of Vitamin K are equally effective. Studies* have shown that Vitamin K2 MK-7 is the most effective. As a result I take this as a supplement as well. I also do bone strengthening exercises. I have no side effects from the medication I take.

GadgetBuster thanks for sharing your experience. I particulary appreciated this. I see that you have started taking your medicine and it was with about the same age I'm now. Did you have DEXA exam to compare the progress( before and after) medicine? Good week

Hi Verauk, it's too early to assess progress, but I will be having another DEXA scan in a year's time. I hope I will see an improvement, but given bone density declines with age anyway, a 'standing still' result would be good.

GadgerBuster and  Nottinghamryan2 Just to be clear for me, when you mention you have no side effects with your meds, you both mean biphosphonates right? Not only vitamins. Sorry to bother you with so many questions.

Hi Verauk,

I meant no side effects from biphosphonates which I take as directed, some years ago I was prescribed calcium tablets which I found caused constipation but when I looked at my dietary calcium intake it was more than daily requirements so I now just use a spray for vit d and vit k . I joined a Nordic walking group 7 ish years ago and it’s very sociable and good weight bearing exercise ,

Sorry only just replied,

Hi, I recently learned about the benefits of K2 MK-7. Would you mind sharing the dosage you take of this vitamin as well as D and calcium?

GadgetBuster in reply toTeddyandCocoa

Per day: VitD3 20 mcg; Calcium carbonate 3000 mcg equivalent to 1200 mcg Calcium; VitK2MK-7 100 mcg plus MK-4 500mcg (as there are benefits for MK-4, albeit has a lower half life than MK-7)
