Has anyone else had a problem taking Calcium resulting in a bloated stomach and constipation ? My stomach is so bloated I can't fasten my trousers.

Would appreciate some feedback please.

No, not at all. What calcium did you get? I take CalDVita

I take Evacal D/3 am and pm. I didn't know there are other types. Thanks for replying.

Oh yes, I first prescribed Accrette, that really upset my gut, then I was prescribed Ad-Cal which did the same. They were both calcium carbonate which can be pretty harsh. The fracture liaison nurse and I worked out that I was getting enough dietary calcium - you can do it for yourself if you use the ROS calcium calculator from their website so I gave up on the prescribed calcium. .

I now take one Together Health Algae based Calcium (less than the full dose) every day to ‘top up’ and my gut feels fine.

I should take Evacal D3 am and pm but this week have only taken it once or not at all. I feel I don't want to take it with the constipation problem. Will check the website you've posted. Thank you.

Oh forgot to say I also buy my own D3 and test regularly to be sure I am taking enough.

Where do you get tested please ?

If I am wanting to test other things as well as Vit D I use either

Medichecks - medichecks.com

Or

Monitor My Health - monitormyhealth.org.uk

or if I am only wanting to check Vitamin D I use what used to be called City Assays but is now this vitamindtest.org.uk they send you a little card and you just put a spot of blood inside a few circles that have been marked on it.

Yes they are well known side effects. When I told my GP I'd stopped taking Adcal because it caused horrible bloating and constipation he suggested I take Movicol to improve bowel movements. yet another med! There are plenty of other better options for bone protection than Adcal.Have a look at the ROS website or talk to their nurses then go talk with your GP

Thank you. I will try to see my doctor tomorrow.

If you can get enough calcium daily via your diet that is by far the best way to go. I hated the combined calcium/ Vit D3 tablets prescribed and years ago went to see my doctor and he gave me a form to complete whilst at my appt and we decided together that I no longer needed a combined tablet and from then on was only prescribed VitD3. Hallelujah! Why doctors cannot discuss calcium in diet with a patient before issuing a prescription is beyond me.

I've taken VitD3 for long time. I was put off taking the calcium after reading some doctors think it's a waste of time. Will see what tomorrow brings. Sounds as if you're ok without it. Thanks.

I manage absolutely fine without taking calcium via tablet form. I get enough calcium daily via my diet. 💛

If you are taking Calcium Carbonate, it is more likely to cause constipation. It is harder for the body to absorb, adds to digestive issues, and you should take it with food. Try taking Calcium Citrate. It is gentler on the stomach and is less likely to cause constipation. Calcium Citrate is also absorbed better and you do not have to take it with food. I have been taking this without any GI issues. I take Citracal Maxium Plus.

I’ve been taking organic calcium + D3 and previously took organic ocean plant calcium and D3 separately. Also take K2 once a day

However, also had constipation and recently reduced taking the supplements to 3 X a week which seems to have helped. GP not concerned if I take calcium or not as figure I get enough in diet!!
