Hi allI'm looking for advice on travel insurance. I had a heart attack on 22/10/24 caused by atrial fibrillation & am now on medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol & blood thinners.
Luckily there is no damage to my heart & my arteries are clear, so have been signed off by my consultant.
I had to cancel a planned holiday in November but hoping to go to Gran Canaria in March.
Can anyone recommend a travel insurance company with medical cover please?
Many thanks

Thanks for your reply. I've checked out a few online with all my details & medication. Seems to be quite a price difference so looking for recommendations
I have just taken insurance from insure and go. For a 12 day norway cruise. Opting for their silver cover which was £540. Listing all my af pacemaker. Sleep apnoea etc. gold was over £900. They are recommended by which. I got a similar quote from go compare. The Insure & go silver cover was as good as the others.
Have you looked at M&S travel insurance?Underwriters are Aviva
Cheaper obviously to book single trip. Annual for me was over £800. Single trip for me and my husband £280.
I had cardiac arrest 12yrs ago, 2 stents. Heart bypass 2 yrs ago, I also have a leaking valve. I am going to malta next year all being well. Might be worth a look.
I now have our travel insurance through our bank RBS £500 for the 2 of us for annual. I had a heart attack 2 years ago, and had 2 stents fitted , this happened in Spain, and at the time I was covered with Staysure, who paid out over 40 thousand euros as I was in a private hospital as that was the nearest and I was critical, I also have M.S. the premium at the time was £1200 annual cover, I declare everything. Now my premium is half going through the bank and they use Allianz, which I have never had to use yet, and I hope I never will, but declare everything. Also look at Paying Too Much, it is a good site.
We, too have RBS travel insurance - over 70, medical conditions and trip extension cover for £600. Had to claim recently for cancelled holiday due to grandaughter illness. Allianz was easy to deal with both on the phone and online and we received the money (less excess) within a month.
each insurer views things differently, and the insurer who gives a good price to me might not give a good price to you because our individual medical and family history, age etc are dry individual things.
Please have a look at the website of Monryhelper UK and Moneysavingexpert and find their articles on travel insurance.
my husband and I have annual policy with Avanti Travel - he’s been on HBP medication for nearly 10 years - we are both 61. When his medication was amended we saw an small increase. And when we turned 60 the same. Our policy is due for renewal in February so will find out shortly how much my recent diagnosis is going to impact our premium 🫣
It's a minefield with prices and criteria varying hugely. I got affordable annual cover online via 'Paying Too Much', definitely worth checking. As others have said, tell them every last little thing so that you are completely covered if needed. Good luck!
Hi Bluebe, I have just bought my travel insurance from Staysure. It was much cheaper to get a yearly one if you are planning another holiday. I had heart failure in June 2024 and I am a 66 year old woman. Interestingly, it was cheaper to put in Dilated Cardiomyopathy than Heart Failure, as that is the sort I have. I tried the 6 well known ones for heart failure and this one was about £1,000 less than the others.
Hi Bluebelle, I have used ‘All Clear Insurance” since my AF diagnosis. They are competitively priced, hassle free and cover a multitude of health conditions.
Do your own research on a website covering travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions and take it from there. Or talk to a local insurance broker. We are all different in terms of age, where we are going and for how long, what conditions we have etc etc and insurance providers view us differently in terms of risk. And if you have a condition awaiting an investigation that will make the cost more expensive and some providers may decline cover. And just because someone on here had a good deal with one provider doesn't mean everyone else will.
I have used Staysure and declared my AF and a few other issues. I've also had to make a travel delay claim which was handled efficiently. They, like other insurers, will load your premium according to their interpretation of medical risk.
Direct line didn't want to know when I tried them in the past.
We go with staysure insurance, haven’t had to make a claim so can’t say whether they’re good from that perspective but they cover the range of conditions my husband has. It is expensive compared to what we used to pay previously but that’s to be expected!
We’ve used Avanti and All clear. Currently have a worldwide annual policy with Avanti. My husband had Aortic Valve and Root replacement. They are quite competitive and you can put all your medical info in.
hi george hope you are well. I've recently has the same, aortic valve/ & repair of the aorta. Just woulnderd our you word it to the insurance company's. Do you have to infirm them that you have has this surgery, as its generally about are you waiting ongoing tests or surgery. Don't want to say the wrong thing.
I know when I got diagnosed they quoted me over £2,000
Hi there, they have free text which then brings up drop downs up and they are quite comprehensive. We have put them down as separate conditions and it prompts other questions surrounding surgery. Obviously age is a factor and we have a family policy but we are 50M, 43F and 15 year old. My husband had his op 5 years ago. It’s £600 for the year
I’ve had considerable geart issues for last 15 years Beverly had an issue with holiday insurance Nany companies are very well versed with most problems and have a standard questionnaire template for cardiac issues when making the declarations
I currently have an annual policy for uk and European travel with Admiral which was very reasonably priced
I used money supermarket to search and it provided many options with out any issues
We are with Avanti. Not the cheapest but the best in my opinion I had a HA in March on the same meds as you hubby has Afib on similar meds and had cath ablation still on meds similar to me. We pay annual top level insurance and it was £585 for all Europe including Spain and cruise cover. May be cheaper without cruise cover. This year we were away with our grandchildren one was ill went to the cruise hospital and the insurance had paid us out 3 days after her visit and we were still on the cruise. Very prompt and efficient. Be sure to list absolutely everything that you take and is wrong with you both when applying though because they will not cover anything that was not disclosed and may not pay out in the event of any incident even if not related.
This company was started and is run by someone who worked in this field and struggled to find affordable cover for travel insurance with a specific condition
I’ve used travelinsurance4medical.co.uk a few times now and whilst never had to make a claim thankfully, easy to setup and cheaper than a lot I found online
That's a tough one. When I looked into this for my Turkey hols, I almost gave up (well I did on the insurance) and went on my "own steam". It's almost like none of the popular travel insurance companies want to "touch you with a barge pole"- nothing happened and all went well.
But I heard of someone using their European Health Insurance card to Greece, which you can use in Gran Canaria.
Having a triple bypass scheduled for January flying to Spain for the new year just taken a policy with AllClear £343 for a year, cover £10 million with a £250 excess.
Just to clarify my case manager is aware of my travel plans and she is happy for me to travel as I have the insurance I arrive back on the 18th and her planned admittance is for the 19th.
Hi I have had a heart transplant and bowel cancer, unfortunately I also have osteoporosis and arthritis. I use insurancewith.com they specialise in pre existing conditions I also make sure I have my ghic card with me. Good luck getting your insurance and have a fab holiday, we are off to sunny Spain tomorrow. Char
Hi , I went on the comparison sire and ended up being insured with Rock a single trip was £95 for the family and covered me with my HA and stent fitted in 2023 this was for a single trip
Hello I have afib and heart failure and a few other things and I travel a lot! I used to be with staysure but had to claim with something and they took months and weren't easy to deal with as their claim help was based on Thailand and their actual claim dept as with most companies is farmed out to someone else but these weren't good either.Changed to all clear and developed afib on a cruise ship in June put the claim of thousands of pounds in on the Monday I returned and the money was in the bank account the Monday after.
Staysure may have upped their game now and they are cheaper but both companies good at covering this type of stuff.
Have a great time!
As long as consultant says you are fit to travel you are good to go.
The cost will be the cost and worth every penny if you have to claim.
I use Avanti - cost about £420 for annual policy including cruise cover, and I am 85. There is paying too much and also, I think, Insure and go. Always include all medical conditions or they may well invalidate the policy. Staysure are very good, but I think pricy. Avanti is a Staysure company.
Comparison sites for 'Existing conditions' Declare everything, if you don't it will be null and void as they will get to view your medical records in the event of a claim. It's hard to advise on them unless you've been unlucky enough to make a claim, only when you make a claim you'll find out how good they are.
I've used a number if different companies as it varies a lot dependent on where you are going, and cruises are always far more expensive although one company distinguished between river cruises and ocean cruises which was helpful. I've used, all clear, total protection, saga and staysure. Total protection were cheapest for a European cruise but won't insure me for thailand/malaysia and mine was on afib with ablation in June and still taking bisoprolol
I use All Clear travel insurance. Although I struggle speaking on the phone I find it easier to speak to someone. They include 12 separate diagnoses for me and we have an annual policy as I frequently pop over for 24 hours to see my father in law who isn’t in the UK. They ask all the questions and say anything else in a warm way! And the price has been ok. Not outrageous but not sure how much, but we don’t have masses of money and we could afford it.
I used the comparison site “medical travel compared” as recommended by Martin Lewis and then went with Ageas - it was much cheaper than other options like staysure.
I am 70+, have Heart Failure, a Dual Chamber Pacemaker, AF, Hypertension, stomach problems, and have had cancer in the past. All are managed well with meds.
I have annual cover with All Clear for £600. But it's for Europe not the US.
I had a quote for single trip cover for the US with Saga a couple of years ago and it was £800+! They wouldn't give annual cover. At the same time, Staysure quoted £700 for annual cover including US.
Prices depend on your destination, and the price of your trip. If you opt for lower cancellation reimbursement the premium will be lower. The US and more exotic destinations are always more for obvious reasons.
Both my husband and I have health issues and we used voyager travel insurance. They specialise in health issues. We purchased years insurance and felt that they came up with the best prices. Hope they can help you get a good deal if you decide to try them
