I was just wondering what dose of Rosuvastatin most people have been prescribed. I have recently had my statin changed from Atorvastatin to Rosuvastatin and the starting dose is 5mg. I’ve read up that some can’t tolerate a higher dose of this drug and the normal is between 5 and 10mg.

I was on 80 mg artovastatin but had some issues with it , had a trial stop of a couple of months ( couldn’t get re booked to see GP!) felt fantastic. Then tried 40mg pravastatin, within a week my symptoms/side effects came back .. spoke to my pharmacist and she supported me for another change and helped get me a timely GP appointment and I’m now settled on 10mg Rosuvastatin nightly. Just had my annual lipid results back recently and very pleased 👍🏻
I couldn’t take atorvastin as it affected my liver,I was started on rosuvastatin 10mg but as I was very worried I only took then 4 days a week, after 12wks had bloods done and cholesterol down so have asked to reduce to 5mg od which seems to be ok and no side effects
Rosuvastatin is 3 to 3.5 times more effective at reducing bad cholesterol than Atorvastatin and 7 to 8 times more effective than Simvastatin. This is why the recommended starting dose for Rosuvastatin is 5mg compared to 20mg for Atorvastatin.
The only statin that needs to be taken before bed is Simvastatin due to its low half life when compared to other statins.
You can take Rosuvastatin at a time of your choosing. The very lengthy Patient Information Leaflet in every box states:
’Take Rosuvastatin tablets once daily. You can take it anytime of the day with or without food. Try to take your tablet at the same time every day …..’
Surely the starting dose of any statin is dependant upon the individual's natural lipid profile, also tempered by the current NICE directive of adopting a maximum dose following a cardiac 'event'. So if you have a natural total cholesterol of 9 you will likely be on a higher dose than someone with a count of 5. Then following this initial dose it will beadjusted to cater for any intolerance effects, and tuned to achieve the desired lipid profile. And that is why in the small sample we have so far some people are on 5mg rosuvastatin with others on 20mg. In short no one size fits all.
My GP has prescribed 5mg as a starting dose because I was having muscle pain on atorvastatin, 80 and 40mg. It will be monitored for 3 months to see how I get on with it. If it’s suitable I will have my lipid profile and the result of that will determine whether to stay on the low dose or increase. I work in a hospital and was told that some don’t tolerate the 10mg or higher due to pains, but 5mg is sufficient but of course everyone is different and it’s based on their needs. I was just asking to see what other people’s experiences were on this drug.
They started me off on 80 mg atorvastatin which caused liver failure so I went off it for a few months then they put me on the 5 mg rosuvastatin and 10 mg ezitimbre which seemed to work well . I then went off the ezitimbre under the advice of my Dr but my ldl increased . I researched a lower dose of 5 mg ezitimbre which was supposedly 80 % as effective as 10 mg so I now take 5mg which keeps my ldl in check . I try to take the minimum necessary as I’m very sensitive to medication . My cardiologist would like me to increase to 10 mg Rosuvastin but as my cholesterol has been consistently under 4 I’m keeping to the lower dose.
Seems like it’s going for well for you. It’s all about trial and error isn’t it….what works for some will not work for others. I think we all eventually get into routine but it’s just finding the right medication that will suit us. The joys of medication 🙈 They did try me with nustendi but I had side effects which weren’t pleasant. I’m glad I found this forum as it’s informative to see how others manage medication and deal with their conditions in the long term.
