Weird bruise on my big toe

I take presugrel, aspirin and Atorvastatin after my heart attack back in December. Ive been recovering pretty steadily .

We travelled up to Criccieth by train yesterday for our holiday and I was wearing my walking boots all day which i didnt take off til about 7:30in the evening.

When i was having a shower my wife noticed this ugly bruise on my right toe.

Ive worn these boots before and walk miles in them but all of a sudden ive got this bruise on my toe even though ive not banged it or anything.

Could this have developed just through rubbing against the leather of my boot through my socks or is it the sign of something else starting? Do i need my blood thinners reducing?

Anyone who is on anti-coagulant or anti-platelet medication (such as aspirin) will notice that small cuts bleed more easily and bruises appear sometimes when you have no recollection of the cause. That's just how it is, and proves that the medication is working as intended. So welcome to the club!

I get them on my arm, yesterday I was playing golf and hit my shin with the putter and found a lovely larger bruise. It's to be expected with the aspirin and prasugrel I take. annoying but expected.

I think im just worried it could get worse and maybe the skin could break down and i end up with some sort of horrible infection like people with diabetes can get.

I had a look on the BHF site and it said its something to be expected with the blood thinners and not to worry to much

I just hope it doesnt develop into an infection as i had an ingrown toenail on that toe as well not long ago that took ages to heal.

toenails are too short and can promote in growing

I broke the toenail on that toe about a month ago in the left hand side and it was hanging off so i had to clip it back. It nearly grew into the skin but it seems to be growing normally again now. I dont normally cut it that short since i had to have it seen to by the podiatrist.

Hi 👋 Baron, I suffered the same lower left-hand calf. I also felt discomfort there. Did a little reading up and Atorvastatin which I'd been taking post Bypass was probably the culprit. However, it might just have a strain engendered by playing tennis for the 1st time after a month lay off.

Either way I stopped the statins the strain eventually cleared up. Make of that what you will.

Best of luck with your recovery,

Denis

I’ve always been prone to getting bruises on joints (mostly fingers and toes). I’ve had the problem long before I was taking blood thinners. Apart from being a bit painful, they are nothing to worry about. If you are worried though speak to your GP or pharmacist.

That’s very much par for the course. And they seem to look worse as the days go by before they start to fade. I’m on aspirin and Prasugrel also since last May and it’s a regular occurrence. The slightest pressure can bring them on. Most I don’t know what from. You only tend to notice when taking a shower. Due to come off the Prasugrel later this month so hope to see a change. Criccieth is wonderful, by the way. Enjoyed my visit there in 2021.

I’m on Ticagrelor, I have been for 11 months, and I find strange bruises in all sorts of odd places. I found one on my shoulder and another on my big toe in the last week, I haven’t a clue how they’ve occurred as I have no recollection of bumping myself at all. My hands, forearms and legs can look a real mess with bruises. They also seem to take a lot longer to fade than pre blood thinners days.

I’m looking forward to stopping the Ticagrelor next month as you may well understand.

I am on prasugrel, i think like yourself i shall only be taking it for a year so i should be stopping that in November or December.

well on Monday my brain decided to fall down the stairs. torn foot ligaments and bruising almost immediately.

Told the doctor in A&E as to how quickly the bruising appeared and he said that happens with the medication I'm on so don't worry.

Hi. I went in the sea yesterday, im on holiday in Wales at the moment, and i think the cold water has helped reduce the bruising on my toe. From other replies it looks like its just something we have to put up with
