hi ,I had a mechanical aortic valve replacement and a anrysyum repair a few years ago .
I've been on 5 mg bisoprolol since surgery. I seemed to have asthma after surgery certainly didn't have it before. There were doctors arguing as to whether I had it or not at hospital after my op anyway several years down the line and on inhalers I definitely have asthma and have just been told to stop taking the bisoprolol as its not suitable for asthmaticasthmatics. Anyone else had asthma after open heart surgery?.

Yes, beta blockers are contra-indicated for asthma. They made mine much worse, though also I had general lung function problems after my 14-hour surgery, and have residual problems with draining fluid from the lungs, which also feels like asthma. The brown inhaler helps to coalesce the fluid into something I can cough up. It does this in minutes, where the brown inhaler is only supposed to be long term.
thank you ,for the info hopefully this will now help my extreme tiredness and breathing, but you would of thought this would of been picked up before its been 5 years on this drug and at present they haven't replaced it I'm still taking rampril, it has to make you laugh because the docs are like you shouldn't be taking it ,as though I prescribed myself. Good luck with your issues on your recovery journey
My husband has asthma and he was prescribed bisoprolol after his vale and root replacement. It definitely made his asthma worse and he had to come off them. There is a connection between them but our GP was fantastic and changed his meds. He’s not on any type of beta blocker now. Hope you get things sorted
I'm asthmatic, well controlled with a seretide inhaler. My dose of Bisoprolol was changed to Nebivolol very early in my diagnosis. It hasn't impacted my asthma at all HTH.
My husband had a spirometry test after being diagnosed with his heart condition and put on bisoprolol as he has asthma. They said he wasn't asthmatic at that time but it can come and go. He finds a brown inhaler helps his chest so his GP prescribes one for him.
Perhaps ask for a spirometry test to see exactly what your lung condition is and take things from there.
Thank you I do seem to be feeling better and breathing better just keeping an eye on bp. I found the brown inhaler helped me much better too ,but they changed it.
hi,I had open heart surgery 5yrs ago,I had never had asthma, when I went back for my6week checkup after my opp I asked the surgeon why was i so breathless when you said my breathing would be better straight away ,he said he didn’t know and it would get better, even my cardiologist doesn’t know why I’m so breathless I’ve had all sorts of tests on my heart and it’s all working fine, well 5 yrs down the line I’ve had breathing tests and they think I have got asthma so like you it must be the open heart surgery,it’s good to know it’s not only me who is complaining about breathlessness,my cardiologist even got me to see a phycologist as she thought it was all in my mind, hopefully now I’ll get the correct medications.all the best to you ,I forgot I’m on bisoprolol and have been since my opp, take carex
Asthma can develop later in life, i was told this is getting more common due to poor air quality - also i'm guessing that if your heart function is affected any problem with the lungs which was being managed by extra works from the heart would show up more
i had asthma when i was younger in response to allergens - but after a heart event i was later diagnsed with asthma which gave such different symptoms that i had not recognised it
Hi I've just seen a pulmonary consultant for the results of my breathing tests,I haven't got asthma or copd and like every other Dr I have seen they don't know why I'm so breathless, he couldn't believe I've been waiting 6 months for a ct scan on my chest and said to get onto my cardiologist to chase it up because it's very important, he said open heart surgery is very traumatic and thinks I might have ptsd I did wonder about this as I haven't been well ever since my opp,but I am pretty strong and didn't realise it would have that sort of effect on me,but I'm still not sure if this is what's causing my breathlessness as I don't really have symptoms of ptsd, stay well everyone x
Thank you for your response, it's definitely the heart surgery thathat caused it .I had alot of trouble immediately after the op with my breathing various face masks with different medication admiadministered was fine before the op there was 2 doctors arguing over weather I had asthma or not ,so until they just recently said yes you've definitely got it . Apparently now I shouldn't be on bisporoil as its not suitable for inhalers or asthma. Please check with your Gp ,I'm worried my blood pressure is going to go sky high keeping an eye on it ,but absolutely feeling much more awake. My breathing is a bit better but could be the new inhaler.inhaler.good luck
