Having a tooth out

I am going to have a tooth extraction the dentist was worried that I am still on blood thinners to help with my stent fitted in April 2021 ( coming off these tablets which I take twice a day end of this month) The tooth is a large tooth at the back as I said the dentist was worried about the bleeding during surgery. The dentist was going to get back to me as she had not heard of the drug Briliquel an anti-platelet drug , I am also on a daily aspirin

Has anyone else had the same problem

Yes. my dentist referred me to the local hospital for the extraction after my angina prevented me from having root canal treatment. I did not need to stop taking the anti platelet (Prasugrel in my case). The oral surgeon took the tooth out and then put a dressing on it. The bleeding stopped after 10 mins max.

Surprised your dentist had not heard of the anti platelet, did he/she not recognize Ticagrelor? It is commonly used.

If you are nearly 12 months post stent, it may be sensible to wait, perhaps ask your doctor for advice.

I’m a dentist. 40 plus years in general practice. Some young dentists are now so risk averse that they seem to use any excuse to avoid doing their jobs. Your dentist should know what the drugs are and how to do the extraction and stop any haemorrhage. It is, in fact, very easy to stop post extraction bleeding.

I agree; my entist knew exactly what to do. I would want to see a different dentist

I needed 3 tooth/extractions whilst on Ticagrelor. Advice from Heart Consultant was to wait until had finished year of taking it if could + another week for it to get out of system. Aspirin no prob. Doesn’t seem too long in your case to hang on if stopping this month. Good luck + sounds like a fun time at the dentist coming up for us both!👍

They may refer you to the hospital to have it removed so it can be managed. I have had much the same issue.

I had a tooth extracted without problems.

I have angina and I am on clopidogrel for life. I can't be given a local anaesthetic with adrenaline which helps reduce bleeding.

My extraction was done because I cracked a tooth and got an abcess .

My dentist who is young and yes a little nervous at times did my extraction at the end of his sessions.

I had to bite hard onto a swab for 10 minutes to stop the bleeding.

I rested for 30 mins on the dentist's chair afterwards.

Then got up very slowly.

I was allowed to go home when I felt okay and there was no sign of bleeding.

No rush, just calm.

Relief as no more pain.

I too can't have the local with adrenaline but they have an alternative

Plain lidocaine without adrenaline.

Adrenaline is often used in local anaesthetics because it constricts the blood vessels so helping to reduce bleeding.

I've never asked; I just say "No adrenaline" in case they forget LOL. They always say it doesn't last quite as long but even with that one and on aspirin I had no problems with bleeding; in fact, even though I had an abscess it healed up better than ever before.. Mind you most of the tooth snapped off leaving roots behind!

Not at all; just a sore gum.

I'm only on aspirin now and had a tooth out just week ago. The bleeding stopped within a couple of hours- no problems. If you are due to stop your anti platelet therapy soon anyway, I suggest you ask your doctor if you can stop it a bit early. It doesn't take long to get it out of your system. I would be extremely worried about using a dentist who doesn't know how to treat you whilst on it. I was on the usual aspirin and clopidogrel after my heart attack but the clopidogrel was stopped after just 6 months because of the damage it was doing to my stomach so I don't think stopping a month early would be a problem.

I take Apixaban and have had two teeth extracted. The first one at the local hospital as it was a double - there were no problems. The 2nd one by my dentist. He wrote to my GP asking for advice. Fortunately, I had researched the procedure via the internet because the advice from the GP was wrong! So, in your case have you thought about consulting the Consultant who prescribed your drugs. I always find speaking to their Secretary is always helpful.

I had a wisdom tooth extraction and three months later an upper molar extraction, all for whilst on Clolidogrel. My dentist said that unless I was on something as strong as Warfarin, there was no need to stop taking the blood thinners pre surgery. The wisdom tooth did bleed for about thirty minutes after extraction, but the dentist gave me some special dressings to bite down on until bleeding ceased. I hope that this helps in some way.
