I have had a heart attack and had stents fitted and now take aspirin on a regular basis.
I need a wisdom tooth taken out and my dentist has said I need a note from cardiac surgeon to tell me to stop taking aspirin before procedure is this normal practice
Thanks

I had a quadruple bypass last year and needed a decayed broken molar taken out this year and continued on aspirin
There was no bleeding problem or should I say problem with bleeding. Your dentist may be being cautious.
My problem was infection. I asked for prophylaxis antibiotics (taken day before, on day of treatment and day after) to avoid infection but was refused. A week later I needed a week's course of horse antibiotics! I personally think it worth asking.
Because you have had stents stopping aspirin carries a slightly greater risk than otherwise. Because of the half-life of aspirin missing one on the day of treatment may be acceptable. The best thing is to put a call into your cardiologist.
I recently checked with a friend of mine who’s a consultant in prosthodontics and restorative dentistry. She said this is no longer required. We’re all different though so maybe check with your cardiologist.
Don't stop any meds without checking with the md. Here in the US I would tell my patient to contact the person who placed the stent and no one else. If it was early on . Later to contact medical cardiologist.
This is something we had to reinforce multiple times before discharge from the hospital.
In the first instance ask to speak to the Secretary - that should get you answers or at least the ball rolling where they may pass you on to another in the Cardiac team. Hope this helps
I had a heart attack and a stent two years ago. A year later I also needed a wisdom tooth removed. I wasn't required to come off aspirin. However, they did say it would take longer to heal and as a precautionary measure they stitched over the wound so there would be less chance of the clot falling out.
Hi I had tooth out last year still took aspirin no trouble with bleeding . I would ring your consultants secretary she will be able to get an answer for you. Hope it all goes well for you.
I had a '1 on 4' fitted 8 weeks after heart attack and stent fitting. This required removal of 5 teeth, and 6 hours in the dentist chair. The main problem was with the socket where the removed tooth was outside the area of the implants, which required Adrenalin at A&E to stop the bleeding. Other problem was the facial bruising. I looked like I had been beaten up for 3 weeks! BUT all was well after that, and I now have a beautiful and functional set of teeth, which is life changing. I would go through it all again.
Wow. What a fab patient you are. It’s lovely to hear a patient say that their implants are life changing! I hope you are enjoying your food and eating out with friends and family.
