Need help with medication. Having found a week ago I need a dental extraction noticed I need to come off the Ticagralor for at least five days Dentist said ask your Dr. Dr said ask the Cardioligist. Phoned the Cardioligy department the said we are closed Fri,Sat Sunday.

Wondering if I should do what the medication document says and get started by stopping them or wait to talk to the Cardioligist and keep taking Paracetamol for the toothache.

It's a shame no one could just answer your question? I'm sure your gp could have advised you. Now that you cut speak with the cardiologist I wonder if nhs 24 would be able to advise you?? Maybe worth a wee call?

I had an ICD implanted while on Ticagrelor and was told the stop taking it for 7 days prior to procedure

Wait for the Cardiologist. I had to wait until I was off ticagralor before I could have a wisdom tooth removed. It is very important that you stay on it for at least a year after stenting to prevent a clot forming at the site.

It’s very annoying that you can’t get this advice quickly. My husband has had several extractions and he has come off the blood thinners beforehand just for a few days. However he was on Clopidogrel. You need to be able to clot following dental treatment so I’m not sure of the alternative. Hope you get sorted.

I am on Ticagrelor following HA and stent last year. I had a tooth removed a few weeks ago with no problems at all. My dentist was aware of my medical history and was confident that it was ok to do the extraction.

Hi EngineerB,

I had 2 wisdom teeth extracted while I was taking Prasugrel. My dentist didn't ask me to stop taking the medication, but would only extract one at a time and he was very aware of the potential for bleeding...... which didn't happen. It is all about the potential risk and it would seem neither your dentist or GP is willing to accept responsibility for that.

I hope you get the answer you require very soon.

All the best,

Gerald

I was a dentist. I’m on ticagrelor and aspirin and had a tooth extracted last year. All I did was keep pressure on the socket for an extra a ten minutes and took some extra pack home with me in case it started to bleed again. I had no problems and it does make me bruise easily. Your dentist should know more about this than your GP or cardiologist because that’s part of a dentist’s job but my impression now is that no one wants to take responsibility for making a decision.

Thanks, I think you may be well right about no one wanting to take responsibility. Initially when I started the meds a year ago I had more bruised skin than normal skin but now I think my body has adapted as no bruises anywhere so feel like showing the Dentist your story.

But it’s his story not yours!

Another thought. What’s the worst that can happen if you stop the tricagrelor. Heart attack and death. If you have the extraction a bit more difficult to stop it bleeding. To me it’s a no brainer.

Yes the dentist takes responsibility for the extraction and subsequent bleeding. And yes local measures should be in place for patients who bleed more.

But the cardiologist is best placed to know what other issues maybe caused by stopping the medication for any one individual patient.

Surely better to get all the information so that the dentist/patient can make a fully informed decision.

Not the dentist’s fault that EngineerB can’t get the information needed.

The dentist should know. It’s our job.

I didn't come off ticagrelor and had 4 teeth extracted as an emergency with no issuesWas told next time to ask if I needed to come off and was told I didn't as they are an anti platelet and the only thinners I am on is aspirin

I would still consider getting some sort of medical advice before continuing though

It's always best

Strange wording on the paperwork supplied with the anti platelet Ticagrelor says it should be stopped 5 days before dental surgery.

Wait, the Ticagrelor protects you from forming blood clots which can kill you. Toothache won’t!

Hi I was advised by my cardiologist on discharge that if I was advised by a dentist to stop ticagrelor , do not listen and I shouldn’t stop this for any reason. They said it’s a common question they get. I would speak again with doctor before doing anything

I had 6 teeth removed and 4 implants put in whilst on Trig. GP said to keep taking it . Dentist put adrenaline in the anesthetic, but even so I ended up at A&E to stop the bleeding . The bruises lasted 2 weeks. But I would do it all again as the new set of teeth have been life changing.

I had to have an extraction and stopped them for 5 days and all went well. no excessive bleeding after my extraction thank God.but everyone is different

It would be best to seek medical advice. It would not be good to take the wrong pills. It would be good to wait to talk to your doctor to get the right solution for your health. To not hurt your teeth, take Paracetamol, but no stronger pill, because it will affect your heart. I did not listen to the doctor and took pills much stronger than Paracetamol to get rid of toothache due to braces. I'm sorry I didn't ask the orthodontist for advice at smiledoctors.com/locations/..., and I took pills that affected my heart. So any step you want to take, you should consult a specialist.
