Total Knee Replacement surgery (TKR)...

Hi All,

Has anyone (with ataxia) had Total Knee Replacement surgery (TKR)? I've been told I need TKR in my left knee but am a bit leary about doing it, as I have ataxia, due to Niemann Pick C disease (adult on-set). I have severe arthritis in my left knee and a bone on bone situation. Years ago I had a torn cartilage removed. It was great for years after, but I'm 65 years young now and my knee is worn out. I recall my neurologist telling me that he's seen people with ataxia symptoms not able to rehabilitate after knee surgery unless they build up their strength before surgery. I'm in so much pain I'm living on over the counter Ibuprofen and Tylenol. I'm going to start physical therapy next week to build up my strength, as I've lost strength, especially in the bad knee leg. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You, February ;o)

Hi. February

I know just what pain you are going through. I had my right knee replaced 18 years ago and it is still fairly good but the success lies in the exercises you do AFTER the operation My left knee now needs replacing but my ataxia will make the exercises virtually impossible 😡😡 However the exercises you are about to start may help you with your decision

Good luck and keep us all informed. I forgot to mention that I didn't have Ataxia when I had my first knee done-----------in fact I hadn't heard of Ataxia then!!!

Hi,

My husband ataxia, and he has just had a full knee replacement surgery four months ago.

We were told that it takes anyone a minimum of six months to recover fully.

The sooner you can do it the sooner the worst will be behind you!

What is the alternative? I don’t think there is one.

And how can you possibly exercise when you are in agony? Nonsense.

Get yourself on the emergency list for the op and get it done.

Be aware and accept that this op hurts, the exercises afterwards are painful, but it really is your only option.

My husband bought a stationary bicycle for the front room (we were told that is the best form of exercise once home from hospital). If you are not too stable with your ataxia you can get a recumbent bike and if you look for second hand ones on ebay/gumtree/preloved you can get a good one for around £50.

Tough decision, I know, but delaying it is just going to make it harder.

Good luck and please do keep us posted on your progress!

And if you have any questions my husband can answer I’ll get him to get in touch with you.

Hi again February

I use a knee support now and I find it stops most of the pain and keeps the leg straight. Worth a try!

Cheers. Ted
