laughter is a good thing, I tell people that I am still short, fat and hairy! In the gym I have a personal trainer who challenges my balance with exercise, I also go swimming twice a week and am trying to trampoline! which again challenges my balance!
I have neuro physio and the exercises are at the moment within my comfort zone. I would suggest asking for a physio referral, even if they give you a set of exercises over the longer term and maybe review every few months.
Laughter is an essential component to keeping it all together, I've spoken with a couple of neuro nurses, lymphodema nurse, OT nurse recently and they were amazed that I wasn't a jabbering heap in the corner with my health history. I even tutor Maths for a couple of hours most weeks to keep the grey cells bouncing!
Hey, I have a different type of Ataxia, however I think staying strong is a requirement so I do quite a bit of weights. Big compound stuff, then boost weight stuff.
I also have started using a Wii with my children, balance games are fun and i get to use it with the family, it's very low risk....
I'm working on other stuff as well, because we all have a long way to go yet
Dear Ant, I do exercises for strength and balance, if I'm standing I always hold own to something sturdy, so as not to fall (as a rule, I use a cane). Lying on the floor is my preference, as no risk of falling, although getting up can be a workout in itself...,ha! If you Google exercises for strength or Google exercises for balance, you'll find some good ones! You can even exercise while sitting in a chair/wheelchair! Keeping muscles strong is so important with ataxia, especially leg and core muscles. I also belong to a wellness center that has a warm water pool, a good place to do exercises, easy on the joints plus the water holds you up! My neurologist has always told me if you don't use it, you lose it! He says to be as active (safely, of course) as possible. Sometimes I go for a walk outdoors with my Access Active Collator also. My best to you...,. ;o)
