My mom was diagnosed with pneumonia 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately 10 days of antibiotics were ineffective. She had a bronchoscopy today and while waiting for results, I was wondering if anybody else was in the same situation and what did the bronchoscopy show?

Bronchoscopy
My consultant sent me for a bronchoscopy not long after I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis. The result showed Haemophilus infection lurking deep in my lungs. Hope this helps.
Hopefully they'll detect the bug ensuring your mum's given the correct antibiotic to treat it.Every time I've had pneumonia I've been given at least 2 weeks of a decent antibiotic, often more.
I’m was admitted to hospital with pneumonia 6 weeks ago. After 4 chest x-rays and a bronchoscopy the pneumonia has cleared up. The bronchoscopy results were clear apart from a small collection of fluid in the bottom of one lung, which they tested samples of but they were clear of infection. I also have asthma and bronchiecstasis, and the consultant said the pictures were as he expected them to look.
Thanks for your reply. How long did the antibiotics take to clear the infection?
I was on three different I’ve antibiotics, the third one very strong, to be fair, my infection markers were very high and it was thought that there was infection somewhere else so I had multiple ultrasounds, ct scans, x-rays and mris of my abdomen and pelvis areas, culminating in a Pet scan on Tuesday. The only thing it picked up was a pocket of fluid under neath a pressure sore I got last year. Surprise surprise, my daughter and the district nurse team have dressed this wound since last July, without any infection. In the 6 weeks I’ve been in hospital, it has been infected twice, caused by the nursing staff dressing it, and I’m now on my second course of oral penicillin!
Wow, you’ve been through a lot and a lot of testing. Hope you are now on the mend. How long did it take to get the bronchoscopy results?
The dr saw the results the same day but it took him longer to get the report. He drew the curtains round my bed when he told me and I thought it was going to be bad news but it wasn’t! I’m ok now, and t be here if it wasn’t for the infection on my hip. I’ve been waiting 4 days so far for an ‘urgent’’ ultrasound on my hip. I doubt about other hospitals but at the QE in Birmingham, the radiographers rule their own kingdom, and will not tell even the drs when time slots are. A porter will appear and you know it’s your turn. The sister from my ward has been on the phone on and off all day, just to see if I’m actually on the list, but radiography won’t even answer the phone! I was so fed up today I told the sister I was going to discharge myself if it wasn’t done tomorrow!
hello I’ve currently got pneumonia and first 2 week course of antibiotics didn’t work, so I was put onto co-trimoxazole for 2 weeks which are working wonders. I also have a 2 week course of IV antibiotics to come from 16th April to make sure it’s all gone. Strangely I’ve never had a bronchoscopy and I’ve had bronchiecstasis for 20 years. Hope she gets better soon xx oh and the bug I grew was Haemophilus too….nasty little thing
Probably needs a course of intravenous antibiotic, and the right one for the bug that has invaded her. Also, a CT Scan might show up things better. I mean has she had/got pleurisy, and maybe fluid on the lungs?
you may have to wait a couple of weeks for the full results of the bronchoscopy as some bugs take a while to grow in the lab. The last one I had didn’t show anything significant but I had an op on my sinuses six months later which showed pseudomonas which had been the cause of many infections. I hope they can the cause of your mother’s pneumonia.
hey, did they take a sample of mucus from your sinuses and test it, like the would during a bronchoscopy? Do you mind if I ask was the sinus op for chronic rhionsitus or something else? I’ve read that getting the sinus stuff under control can help the lower airways but I’m not sure
Yes they did take samples to grow. They didn’t want to do the op as I had an infection but I had constant infections at the time. Chronic sinusitis which went hand in hand with the chest infections/pneumonia. The real game changer for me was getting the correct antibiotics for the pseudomonas.
Hi PE-R,
I have asthma and COPD. I also have nasal polyps which cause a lot of sinus problems and constant post-nasal drip. Recently, after a 2-week vacation in Mexico I was hit with a nasty bug after returning home to Canada. I was given Moxifloxacin ab and 50 mg of prednisone for a week which helped take care of the bug but still left me with lots of mucus from the sinus/nasal passages and from the airways. I began flushing the sinuses with NeilMed morning and night flushing out loads of gook. This continued for a few days but then it began to clear up and now my sinuses are clear and it has also reduced the amount of mucus I cough up from the lungs, so I would say that clearing the sinuses definitely helps clear the airways too.
