Had my bronchoscopy/chartis assessment for valves insertion today but sadly failed the assessment so now have to hope I'm okay for a LVR Operation when the next assessment comes around in the new year

Sorry to hear that Will, not the most comfortable of procedures i know and to then be told you are not a suitable candidate is disappointing,i presume you have positive collateral ventilation? i hope you can get nice and fit for LVRS in the near future,

Best wishes Ski's and Scruff's

Sorry to hear this Will. You must be very disappointed. Take the best care of yourself and hope you manage to meet the criteria for LVRS in the future.

Do you mind me asking why you failed the assessment? It’s just that my husband has been told he may be able to have valves and it has given him a bit of motivation to try to get fit and put on a bit of weight. He’s been told he’s not suitable for LRVS so it’s his only chance. Think he’ll be very disappointed if he’s told he can’t have the valves. Thanks very much

Best wishes

Corin

Once the balloon has been inserted into place there must be no airflow pass it, sadly i had airflow. Fitness is important and also had a rigorous lung function test. Look up "Chartis assessment " which explains everything

The valves are designed to stop air travelling down your airways and to allow spent and trapped air in the target area to be exhaled, hence they are one way valves, different sizes are available to suit different size airways to stop air leakage over the valves, the problem is that sometimes the airways, being natural living tissue re configure themselves after the valves are inserted thus making the valves non functioning such as in my case.

Collateral ventilation is the interlobar movement of air, meaning air that can move from one lobe or portion of the lung to another and it must be observed as being negative or not happening when the catheter inserted is inflated in the chartis assessment .i imagine in your case you could quite possibly have recorded as being positive and that the air was coming back out via another part of the targeted lung or that the fissures between your lung lobes are not complete,?

i got my negatives and positives around the wrong way so i have edited my reply but the outcome is the same as has happened for you Will,it's a shame but there is every chance that you will be suitable for that LVRS and i hope you can proceed with that in the New Year. :)
