Bronchoscopy advice

Hi,

I'm new here and currently having lots of tests done on my lungs to see why I'm so breathless and wheezy after a nasty chest infection. Im usually healthy and don't smoke but have spent a week in Hospital on nebs and oxygen I've had lung function tests, I've just finished 5 weeks on oral steroids and now I'm on steroid inhalers and salbutamol and ranitidine and omeprazole to rule acid out.

I had a Bronchoscopy last week which I couldn't cope with. They ended up abandoning it because my heart rate went too high I was so distressed and the sedation didn't work. I've had echo of my heart, ECG's and all normal and chest X-rays normal. They did a stairs test and my heart rate went up and my oxygen went down. Not sure what this signified but it meant they wanted a CT. I've got the CT scan booked for this week.

Will this show everything the bronchoscopy would have or do you think they might still want to repeat the bronchoscopy. I know nobody can tell me for sure but just wondered if anyone else had been through the same and if they had to repeat the bronchoscopy.

Feeling really frustrated about it all.

Hi Frizzle and welcome to the forum. The CT will show just about everything going on in your lungs. I have no idea if they will need to repeat the bronchoscopy because we don't know why it was done originally but I think the best advice I can give right now is to try not to worry about what ifs... and await results of the CT scan. :)

My case isn't the same as yours. But I had an abandoned bronchoscopy and 2 weeks later had a second one using general anaesthetic. which went well.

See healthunlocked.com/blf/post... and healthunlocked.com/blf/post...

Bronchoscophy lets them see the airways and take samples at the time.

So sorry you've had an absolutely ghastly time with everything, especially the bronchoscopy. Its certainly no fun,so I completely understand your worry etc. I'm certain you'll soon receive replies from other members who have been through similar procedures. Please do come back and tell us how everything g went etc. Until then, best wishes!

Thank you for the kind replies, it's good to know that a bronchoscopy can be done under a general as I think that's what they will have to do if they want me to have it again.

Always hard posting for the first time but you've all made me feel very welcome.

I have appointment to see respiratory consultant next week hopefully they'll have results from CT and bloods and know what's up with me! I've not been able to work since the start of this and I'm desperate to get back to normal.

Thank you again.

Hi Frizzle, it sounds like they didn't give you enough sedation. I've had countless bronchoscopies and never was aware of any of them. I made it very clear to them that I was really nervous and they upped the sedation a little. It's worth asking if they can do this if you need to have the Bronchoscopy repeated but hopefully they'll get all the info they need from the CT scan.

Hi, Thank you for your reply.

I did wonder if they didn't give me enough sedation. I've had colonoscopies with sedation and never remember anything about the procedure.

Yet I didn't feel any different with the sedation and remember it all so clearly! They wanted to put fluid in my lungs and then remove it to biopsy and I remember thinking I was choking on it! Was horrendous and because I had this thing keeping my mouth open I couldn't talk and ask for more sedation. Then my heart rate went silly and my oxygen dropped so they abondoned it! Grrr I did wonder if perhaps they couldn't use as much sedation but obviously they can. Thank you for letting me know.

Hi, I went for bronchoscope but the specialist I saw said he could treat me without that ordeal of a bronchoscope, he gave me Ciprofloxacin for 10 days and after 6 days I am starting to feel a little better and not so puffed and he will see me in the chest clinic. So fingers crossed.

O poor you it's sounds just the same as I've got, have had chest X-ray, ct scan with dye, going for a bronchoscope next Tueday with samples being taken. Am feeling really miserable and fed up today...sometime I think it's the air con you get from flying , mine started in March after a long haul flight and nothing at the moment seems to be working....see what next Tuesday brings...
