Bronchoscopy: Has anyone had a... - Lung Conditions C...
Bronchoscopy
I am sorry I can't help but PLEASE ring the BLF helpline - I am sure they will help you and take away some of the fear. Good Luck TAD xx
Dont worry, Iv'e had one and it also included a lung wash out. The consultant squirted some liquid into my lungs and sucked out the bits. These were then sent off to the lab for analising.
Apart from coughing a little there was no real discomfort and it was over quite quickly.
You'll be fine, just relax and its over in no time.
Tony.
Hello Kujude
If you are really scared then ask the medics to sedate you (but make sure that you take someone with you so that you won't be going home by yourself).
You'll be fine sweetie.

Hi kujude
I've had one absolutely nothing to worry about as Annec says you'll be fine.
Liz xx
I have had several done and had sedation each time, its all very easy I woke up on the ward afterwards and remembered nothing. It just takes a while to come round so you can go home.
Don't worry

You have the option to say NO..... nothing invasive but will have a scan instead,,,, Doctors are not gods,, even if they think otherwise..... So it is up to you,,,,,,,, my own personal choice is non invasive all the time......WHAT DID WE INVENT SCANNERS FOR xxxx Only my opinion xxx
I was pretty scared too but there really was nothing to be worried about.
I told the anaesthetist I was anxious and she gave me the sedative Madazalan which was absolute magic! I remember the start of the procedure and the end but absolutely nothing inbetween.
They also spray your nose and/or throat will a numbing spray that tastes a bit like very ripe banana. You will also receive oxygen all the time so don't worry about that.
After an hours rest I was up and having a cup of tea and a cake. I'm sure you'll be OK.
Thanks for all the replies my doctor referred me for a ct scan on friday and letter from hosp came today not for scan but bronchoscopy ! X
I 've had one too and can echo what everyone says. They sedate you a little anyway and numb your throat. I coughed a little but I think everyone does and then a nice hour long lie down in a bed. Its fine and I think they can tell more from that than a CT scan anyway.

I had one and didn't find it that bad, they wouldn't give me a sedative because my oxygen levels were too low but they did give me a little (so they said. have my doubts). They also numb the back of your throat. People who had the full sedative were coming out looking very happy.

My Mum has had them twice and I collected her from hospital after the second one.
She said that the first was awful because she wasn't sedated, so she was really scared the second time around. The second one was absolutely fine though. That is because she was sedated.
It sounds as if it's fine if you are sedated, so maybe it's worth finding out about that and ensuring they do that for you?
Good luck

My husband had one, never felt a thing, they just took samples for testing, he actually fell asleep as they gave him a relaxant drug.
When I had to go to ENT for some tests I had a tube up my nose and into my throat, I never felt a thing either no drug at all.
These procedures look worse than they are.
