Takes me about an hour in the morning to stop coughing, as soon as I get out of bed I feel so bunged up in my chest and throat & I really can’t stop coughing until I clear mucus . That’s not easy as it doesn’t want to clear , my shoulders and head hurt and I can’t breathe very well even with the ventolin inhaler they gave me & the braltus inhaler doesn’t seem to do anything either. I’m on my 3rd course of antibiotics & I had 6 days on prednisone. . I do have post nasal drip and am on steroid spray , antihistamine & using a netizen pot

Wheezing Cough
Wow you've had a tough time recently. Have they identified bug from a sputum specimen that you have been the antibiotics for. Just a thought do you sleep in a well ventilated space. Other folks having their central heating overnight makes me wheeze bunged up & increased coughing etc if I've stayed over. I always make sure I can open a window or turn off radiator.
Hope you feeling better soin
Yes, we keep a window on ventilation lock in our bedroom and the central heating at 16c overnight.
I had a similar problem GP prescribed Carbocistine and recommended learning the huffing technique. I saw a physio about huffing and she also suggested nebuliser with saline solution. I now also sleep in a semi sitting position and this combination has stopped the early morning coughing.
I will ask about the carbocistine & I saw a video about the huffing, not sure I’m doing it right as I end up in a coughing fit . I haven’t been able to see anyone it’s all over the phone that’s if you can get on the list when you call. I saw a handheld nebuliser online so I shall check that out , thanks
Try sleeping in an upright position, it has definitely helped me. Putting a settee cushion or something similar by your feet will help stop you slipping down the bed. The other advice given is sensible and has worked for other members. Many small changes can make a big difference. Take care jct1x
Lots of good advice coming your way. I use Carbocisteine, sleep in an upright position and so on. However, my initial reaction to your question prompted me to think about how do you take your Ventolin as since I was advised to always use a Volumatic Spacer I find it works better. I found to that using the Spacer I cleaned my inhaler more regularly.
You have the same symptoms as me. I had this for three months last spring, then had the best summer ever with no asthma or coughing. Asthma and uncontrollable cough returned last October and has got worse since. Asthma and coughing every morning for an hour the moment I sit up when waking and is on and off all day and night. Hence joining you today. I have little faith in the NHS and its total reliance on pharmaceutical drugs for everything, so am very reluctant to take steroids and antibiotics (although I end up taking them as I get so desperate but they never work for more than a week ).
I have started watching Patrick Mckeown at Buteyko Clinic: suppressing your cough, nasal Breathing-Techniques and learning to be calm. It seems unnatural in our current world but is actually natural and harmless.I am interested to find out what works for you.
Take care and stay calm.
I must admit as no one has explained to me why they want me to take all this medication, just keep saying pick up from the pharmacy & the fact that nothing seems to be working as it says it should has definitely got me wondering. My cough was so painful yesterday that my back hurts & I’ve pulled a muscle , so I have been looking at breathing exercises which someone had posted a link for . Definitely calmed the cough or should I say you have to try not to cough which isn’t easy when you can’t cough phlegm up . I will check out your info , thanks if I find anything out I’ll be sure to let you know . Calm it is x
Thanks for your response Spoticus. Just had a bad night myself with two attacks , tried to suppress my cough and nasal breathing for 15sec and hold breath for 5sec, which certainly helped ease the first but needed 10x ventolin in the end. With the second, the Ventolin just kept making me cough violently and pulling my chest muscles again. For the past month I have been drinking grated ginger with honey in half a cup of hot water and that always eases my throat and stops the coughing.I can live with shortness of breath and wheezing but a violent cough not only ruins my night, it disturbs my wife as well. I have also been watching /listening to calming nature videos and that takes my mind elsewhere and greatly eases the attack.
Deep breathing exercises are excellent when you are feeling well(ish) but if you are feeling asthmatic then keep to shallow nasal breathing so you don't aggravate your cough.
Stay calm 😉
That’s grim , I’m trying this honey that has added lemon & ginger . Does feel soothing & must admit the deep breathing seems to aggravate my cough . Funny enough I woke up coughing, turns out my husband was the one who woke me up . Hope you get a better night tonight..
