Wheezing

Hi everyone I hope your all keeping well.I was at doctors on Fri last week for a possible chest infection as I'm coughing more and feel really crappy no temp which is normally a sign for me, I was given antibiotics and steriods for a week. She listened to my chest and says she could hear wheezing in my lungs when coughing but clear when breathing in and out, I'm still feeling so run down and still have cough. Has anyone had that before and any clue what it means. I have copd and asthma.

Sorry if I sound stupid.

You don’t sound stupid at all, just poorly and run down. I’m assuming you haven’t finished the course of antibiotics and steroids yet? If you have however, go back to your GP and explain how you’re feeling.

Hoping you felt much better soon. Xxx

Thankyou so much for your reply sassyI've only been on them three days was hoping to feel a bit better by now.

The wheezing the gp heard on my lungs while coughing but clear when not coughing has me a bit confused as I thought a more of a crackling sound is more of an infection indicator.

Ah as I thought. These things take time unfortunately so see how you feel at the end of the course. Are you expelling mucous? If so, what colour is it? You could take a sample to the surgery and they can send it off to see if it’s an infection.

Wishing you well. Xxxx

I am rushing the recovery quick silly of me I know but hate feeling like this. I am coughing up small amounts light brownish colour. I will certainly take your advice and hand a sputum sample in I've never had it checked before. Thankyou

I agree with Sassy, give it a couple more days & be sure to finish the course. If still unwell a couple of days before finishing let them know, we lung compromised usually need a minimum of 10 days of antibiotics. A week is never enough.

Hi, sorry your feeling so run down, not that I'm an expert quite the opposite. I had a year of chest infections and wheezing and always put on clarithromicyne, excuse the spelling. I am allergic to everything else. When you have asthma or copd it does take a bit longer for antibiotics to kick in. As for the wheezing in your lungs I don't know about that, could just be crap on your lungs that needs to loosen. Good luck 👍

Hello, so sorry you are still not feeling well. It can take a bit of time to get through an exacerbation can’t it.

Can you try and rest up some ? Yes I know it can be tricky and after 20 years of asthma/ COPD I have learnt the hard way, which is that pacing myself, especially when unwell, means that I don’t sabotage my recovery.

Are you taking enough clear fluids during the day ? Especially important in the heat. Are you using your reliever inhaler regularly ? Are you using chest clearing exercises ? Do you use an antihistamine at all. These thunderstorms have brought lots of pollen with them too apparently. When very wheezy I take half an antihistamine and it does help.

Go well.

Pauline

have you provided a sputum sample for testing, a cough can be caused by bacterial, viral, fungal infections also it can be an allergic reaction. Antibiotics will only work if it is a bacterial infection. I have COPD and Aspergillosis and my persistence cough was eventually diagnosed as an allergy to stomach gases due to hiatus hernia

Hi Macjayne, Follow your instincts and see doc again if need be. I had what I belive was covid end of April but no cough. Breathless, 4 days of chills and ended up having antibiotics. Doc could not hear anything on my chest. I went back to docs 3 weeks later as still breathless and not coughing anything up. He checked again and still could not hear anything on my chest. Luckily he sent me for an x-ray which showed an infection or something on my lungs. I had to have more antibotics and a repeat x-ray in 6 weeks time. Either my doc is going deaf or you dont always hear anything even though you have an infection? You know best so follow your gut feelings. Good luck. x

I went to see my GP a couple of days after starting my rescue antibiotics as I was getting worse not better. My sinuses and head were bursting. She added in another antibiotic and strong pain killers. I saw my respiratory consultant a week later and he asked me if I thought it could be viral rather than bacterial. This made sense to me as this was, like you, the first time I had not had a fever with it. It would also explain why the antibiotics weren’t helping. My X-ray seemed to back this up. I am advised to take a sputum sample to the docs every time I get an infection but they always seem to occur at weekends and so not so good once you’ve started the antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon.

I had that early this year and it was a chest infection.

I was given antibiotics and salbutamol because I’m on warfarin, and steroids if the pump didn’t work, but it did clear up.

The wheezing was terrible I couldn’t sleep and when I coughed my belly would hurt or my head would throb. Terrible experience.

I wish you well and hopefully it would clear up soon.

Hi MacjayneSorry to hear about your problems and I know we are all different.

I have Asthma and COPD. A couple of months ago I had a bad bout of coughing wheezing, rattling and some breathlessness. Doc said it it wasnt bacterial but viral so no antibiotics. Sputum test confirmed this. Told to use my relief inhaler and referred me to pulminary rehab. The lady I saw was brilliant. Didnt need the exercises as I am pretty fit and was doing the right things. She did suggest a change in my inhaler to Relvar Ellipta which I now use. What a difference. Within 2 days I had no wheezing, no breathlessness and no coughing or endless mucus. Been on the new inhaler now for 6 weeks and I cannot believe the difference. Hope you manage to get the treatment and medication you deserve. Take care

Sorry for late reply.

First you are not stupid, you feel ill and run down. I don't often get a temp either even when I had COVID.

"antibiotics and steriods" They both take a while before you feel the benefits - If you are no better by the end of your course - Go back to your GP and tell him/her how you still feel.

COPD and Asthma take it out of us when it starts, it's normal to feel shattered and washed out, just give your meds a chance.,

Hope you are feeling well very soon,

Take care

I find this extremely hot weather really dries the air and makes me both wheezy and coughy. Drink plenty and rest.
