Hi, has anyone used Spiriva Respimat inhaler and found it hard to inhale. I have just recently started using this and find that when I inhale it takes my breath away and makes me cough. I would really appreciate anyone who may be having or had the same problem.
Cheers

Yes I found the same but then discovered it will fit into a spacer, the Aero Chamber Plus, which makes it easier all round to use. So long as you don't cover the air holes on the inhaler it works. Both the old style and reusable respimat will fit the spacer. Hopefully this will help you🤞
I dont think spiriva respimat was intended to be used with a spacer HH - are we talking about the sameinhaler or is there confusion with another inhaler perhaps.
Do check back with your GP Tony277 to enquire if your doctor advises you to use the spiriva respimat with a spacer, to be sure you are using the inhaler as it was intended.
Yes of course check with your doctor first before using a spacer. I am talking about Spiriva Respimat. I had the disposable one then the reusable one, both fit with a spacer. I can’t use it without a spacer as it makes me cough and takes my breath away. Also I find the whole twist turn press thing much easier with the spacer. But, I haven’t informed my doctor that I use a spacer with Spiriva so it might not be correct. It hadn’t occurred to me that there might be something wrong with doing that. Please do check with your doctor and don’t just take my ‘advice’ !
yes I would check with your doctor HH its never been intended to use with a spacer to my knowledge (not for adults anyway or perhaps its different for people with asthma). Its a fine mist and to get the best from the medicine the correct technique I am sure will be helpful. See link spiriva.com in my comment below.
I've had no problem and have been using this for years. It could be your technique, check the information leaflet that comes with the med description "How to use Spiriva Respimat Inhaler"
Always be sure to empty lungs (exhale) first, reading the instructions explains.
If you feel you are using the inhaler properly and still having difficulty, do check back with your doctor to discuss problem and perhaps an alternative med may be suggested by your doctor.
You may be one of the unfortunates that the med does not suit.
Hi Tony I use spiriva respimat and I used to use it with a spacer and was told by the respiratory nurses not to do that. I exhale as much as possible and the inhale the spiriva so that you get as much as you can in your lungs. It works for me but I know all this is hard when we are really breathless. X
Hi Patsy, thanks for your reply.Yes I do inhale as you outlined but find it as almost a shock to my throat as I deeply inhale, I’ve used other inhalers in the past without any issues but find this one hard to hold without coughing.
I use it and only have that problem occasionally perhaps on the odd time I don’t inhale deeply enough. Hope you get used to it as it’s a pretty good one.
I used to do a real hard quick inhalation but was told at one of my PFTs that that is what you do for a powder type inhaler but for a mist like the respimat you have to take a very gentle inhalation otherwise most of it will end up on the back of your throat. When you mentioned the coughing I thought perhaps that is what was happening to you.
Hi Jack,Yes I think what you said by taking a gentle intake is the best way, also after asking my chemist if there’s any side effects to also take Asmol, he said that was fine, so I had a shot of Asmol a few hours before the Respimat, it made a big difference with no coughing at all.
Hi Tony, I often find half my dose seems to escape and I see it floating away. Can you speak to your GP or pharmacist...they might be able to give you some tips or change you to a more suitable inhaler for you.
