Hi. Me again. As well as being fairly recently diagnosed with bronch I also have had asthma for 30 years which has been fairly well controlled. I was on a tiotropium inhaler powdered capsules but have been changed to the spiriva respimat fine mist inhaler. When I release the mist while breathing in it immediately makes me cough so basically nothing goes in. Has anyone else had this and does it settle?
SPIRIVA RESPIMAT INHALER: Hi. Me again... - Lung Conditions C...
SPIRIVA RESPIMAT INHALER
Hi 👋 if your not happy on the Spirivia and it's giving you problems change back to your old meds if you were happier on them ... Its so annoying when they change .. why fix something if it's not broken 🙂 good luck
The capsule inhalers... spiriva (not respimat) and also braltus (another capsule based tioptropium) aren't licenced for Asthma, but COPD... its likely your medical person was using it "off licence", which is fine but some doctors don't like to go "away from the norm" .... however if it's working for you ask to switch back.
I tried out Luforbec which is a non powdered inhaler and this did the same to me. I had to breathe in slowly and use a chamber x
Hi Maddie, I was put on spiriva respimat for a short while, it gave me heart arrhythmia so it was stopped. It made me cough too every time I tried to inhale it. I tried it with my volumatic spacer and it made it much easier and no cough. But as others have said if you’re not happy with it do ask to go back to your previous inhaler.xxx
hi as with all other replies if you feel/ know that it’s not right for your needs ask for alternates. I went through six different inhalers before I found the one that worked for me. Good luck. Kevin
Yes!!!!!! It takes time inhale a little faster soon you'll get use to it. I can't even feel it now! I could not inhale it before. The minute I hit the button I inhale fast sometimes I didn't get it all. Now I don't have a problem unless my bronchitis is inflamed
I take spiriva respimat and have done for many years. This can happen to me when I don’t use it correctly, I would speak to your nurse or pharmacist to make sure you are using it correctly. Good luck & hope you can get it sorted. Jan x
Hi Maddie. I've been on Spiriva Respimat for years and it did just the same to me initially. It did settle down quite quickly and now I have no difficulties with it making me cough (except occasionally if I have a chest infection so then I use the Volumatic spacer that I use with my other inhalers). If it were me I would persevere and see if it resolves but if not like many wise advisers on here have already said, go back to your doctor or nurse and ask them to consider alternatives.
hi Maddie, I’ve been onSpiriva Respimat for almost two months. I saw my nurse today and told her I have no idea how much I get from it, as I so often choke with it blasting down my throat. After some discussion she has changed me back to Fostair and I’m so glad and my reliever is back to Ventolin. I feel sure I will feel so much better knowing I will get every dose now although she thinks I’m better with a spacer. Maddie I hope I have helped you a little bit, Just make sure you are happy and comfortable with your medication. It is half the battle we all suffer with.
I have been on Spiriva Respimat since mid-July (so about 4 months/16 weeks) and the doctor strongly recommended me to use a spacer device. She prescribed an Easy Chamber and I always use that for my Fostair and Spiriva. After I press the button I always watch and wait for the Easy Chamber to fill up with the mist before I start to breathe in, it does not all come at once, takes about a second. Then I breathe it in as deep as I possibly can and hold it in as long as I can, as I want the most benefit. I must say Spiriva made me cough at first but only a little bit, and I got used to it within about a week - it helped to do my two morning Fostair puffs first. I have been recording my Peak Flow every day since I started Spiriva and it has gone up from around 250 when I started to around 450 - 500 now (my expected for my age, sex, and height is around 530). So I'm happy. It's odd with the dose counters. I am on cartridge no. 5. Number 2 ran out after 51 puffs, and number 4 after 75 (I use a tick sheet for my meds).
Hi Maddie, I have been on a combination of Ventolin and Spirava for a while now and at first my reaction to Spiriva was the same as yours so I went back to my Dr and he told me to carry on with it so I did and after a while the cough went and I am fine with it now, but I havn’t got Asthma. It took me just over a week to get used to it. I hope this helps Maddie.
Like you I've had Asthma for years and was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis post covid lockdown. I love my spriva respimat, it really opens me up for my Forstair.
