In hospital for treatment of psudamonas

I just wanted to share my experience. I queried a couple of weeks ago about treatment for psudamonas in hospital, and had some helpful advice. I'm now nearly 5 days in. It was scary at first being admitted with covid around. But I've been so well looked after and shielded still. I have my own room even with a window which makes for a much less depressing stay. I'm on regular iv antibiotics, steroids, salbutamol nebs, saline nebs and regular physio. I feel like I'm being put through the ringer, but I'm making good progress, so my 2 weeks might be reduced to 1! I was scared about coming in, theres nothing to worry about. The nurses and doctors are all so kind. I just wanted to share, in case anyone finds themselves in a similar position and that its really nothing to worry about. I'm feeling a tad guilty for enjoying the peace and quiet away from my delightful children a bit too much!

I'm so glad for you Treed, It sounds as if this is your first stay in hospital to sort out those pseudomonas. Its great that your ecpetience is so good snd you are feeling so much better.

What sort of treatment have you had before going into hospital? How did you manage your bronchiectasis. I am interested being a sufferer myself.

Cheers and best wishes.

😁😀😊

Hi Treed I’m glad you are finding your experience in hospital a good one. I was in hospital having iv treatment in December and found it the same. Wishing you a speedy recovery. 😊

So pleased your hospital stay and medication is going so well. Don’t feel guilty re the kids. When your feeling unwell it’s understandable, although I appreciate you are saying this a bit tongue in cheek, you really do need the rest.

Hope you feel better soon.

I was told I had pseudos some time ago but the gp never did anything about it.

You might want to speak to your consultant about this.

Haven’t spoken to a consultant since first diagnosed with bronchiectasis a good ten years ago or more. I do my breathing exercises and shift mucous every day, so guess that helps. Take amoxycillin for infections but breath is getting shorter, but then I am 86.wouldn’t like a trip to hospital. GPS seem to not want to know. Love I ris x

I am really concerned Lyd that you are not under the care of a respiratory consultant with a special interest in bronchiectasis and I am also concerned that your GP is at best complacent. Your age is irrelevant with regard to the treatment you need and deserve.

I can fully understand your reluctance to visit a hospital during this pandemic but look at Tweed’s post for some re-assurance. I have to go to ENT next week and it is upstairs in a large hospital but needs must, although I am a bit concerned too. In a couple of weeks I am at the bronchie clinic to start my own IVs and have no concerns as we never wait in a waiting room and are seen by medical staff within that room. Everyone is wearing PPE at present in any event.

I really feel you should have a good proactive consultant Lyd and you might want to look for one in a hospital which you can get to fairly easily (usually in a large town or city. You could make contact with them and explain you were diagnosed 10 yrs ago, have not seen a consultant in all that time, are growing pseudomonas and only have Amoxil as a rescue med and you feel you have deteriorated re breathing etc. Ask them, as they specialise in your condition, if they would consider taking you under their care. Btw Amoxil is not a drug of choice for pseudomonas. It is good for bacteria which is gram positive but psuedo is a gram negative bacteria, so a bit of a waste of time for pseudo.

If you have problems locating someone or need any help at all, please let us know an area you have access to, and someone might be able to help. You can always pm me Lyd. Not saying I can defo help but if I can I would be happy to.

Please don’t settle for being short changed.

Love cx

Good advice, but can manage so far, afraid of starting a long treatment. I don’t tolerate some antibiotics, even last course of amoxicillin caused me an upset. I have never smoked, believe it might have stemmed from illnesses in my childhood. Thanks for your concern. x

I respect your decision Lyd. You are probably right re childhood illnesses. Bronch is not caused by smoking, although it would not help if someone had bronch. I’ve had mine from being a baby in 1948, so never smoked, apart from a puff and blow for about 2 weeks when I was about 13, which I am told doesn’t count!

wish I was as lucky, admitted to hospital with exacerbation, not keen on going because of danger of catching virus. Told would be segregated from corona virus patients so i agreed to go. Admitted and spent first night on a ward, woke up the next morning to find I was next to to a corona virus patient, hit the roof and complained bitterly. they moved me to another ward where I found out, after my discharge, they were also sending corona virus patients to.
