Hi Polly if you need to take your inhaler after your news you can. As far as the saline goes did they give you a test first. I'm on saline don't use it all the time as it can sometimes make your chest tight if it does don't take it try later or next day. It helps to loosen mucus in the lungs. Hope this helps. X

No test just prescribed by Respiratory Nurse

I had to have a test to make sure it was suitable then passed by my consultant. Don't worry though just use it and see how you go but like I said if it tightens your chest stop and try again later. How often are you suppose to take it? X

How many times are you supposed to neb you salbutamol and what dose. Personally I would not use neb and inhaler together as you are taking in more than your dose. However I only nebulise bronchodilator if doing physio - if I needed bronchodilator at another time I would use an inhaler. Hope that makes sense.

Saline would always be nebbed after your bronchodilator. Is your saline isotonic i.e. 0.9%? If so you would be able to neb it without being assessed at the hospital. However if your saline is hypertonic i.e. 3%, 6% or 7% you should have had an assessment at the hospital as Steph has already suggested.

You will be fine once you get used to it again.

Just got to take salbutamol 1st thing in the morning and then the saline which is 0.9% three times a day do you know how long I should leave it after taking the salbutamol before I use the saline.

Thanks for info so far, bin left in the dark I am afraid

I'd just take ventolin in the morning have a brew and then the saline and just space it through the day. On Monday ring your nurse and get her to explain it to you she shouldn't of let you go without you understanding it. Always ask if your not sure Polly that's their job. Hope your not worried. Take care. X

I've been told that if you need it take your inhaler aswell just don't over do it but I'm sure you wouldn't any way Polly x

I would check back with your doc polly, did the chemist not indicate dose and how often on the medicine pack. You could check back with them also.

Agree with Steph and Blakey it is not acceptable that your prescriber didn't explain how to use your medication adequately.

I wait about 10 mins or so for dilator to work before I neb saline, then do physio about 20 mins later. We are all different and may have different conditions but personally I would never use saline without first using a dilator - even in hospital if the nurses give me a saline I ask them for my terbutaline to take first, but then I have asthma as well as bronchiectasis - it may well be fine for you.

Don't worry about it unduly before you can contact them. Have you got a good pharmacist - mine helps me out loads if I have any queries about drugs. He puts my GPs right sometimes.

Good luck

Hi cofdrop not everyone needs a dilator to use saline I know I don't not sure if Polly does though. That nurse was out of order wasn't she. X

Yes she was out of order hun. Re saline - that's why I said 'it may well be fine for you' in my reply to polly. Best to get individual advice.

Was disappointed with them they are usually so good, I didn't ask any questions just assumed it would be easy.

Just shows I have had COPD for over 20 years and I am still learning.

Thank you for all of your help, will give nurse a call on Monday, and if I have probs before then I will speak to pharmacist.

I think sometimes they 'think' you know what to do when you have had your condition for some time.

I don't neb salbutamol very often but I would use my seratide first to calm things down, then the salbutamol to open up airways, then saline to 'wash out'.

I wouldn't use my ventalin inhaler at the same time. But if I was doing this twice a day I would use the inhaler during the rest of the day if I needed it.

But - best if you phone for professional advice.

Hi Polly, I have Salbutamol/Ventolin and Iprtroptium nebs together then followed by a saline neb. I try to avoid using my Ventolin inhaler if I've just had a neb to avoid the Salbutamol shakes. The first neb relaxes the airways so the saline can penetrate deeper to clear the muck.
