Arthritis and claiming PIP

I am 40 I have arthritis in both knees and have been told there is nothing they can do only a knee replacement which I am too young to qualify to go on the waiting list for. My mobility is becoming harder and I am allergic to Anti inflammatorys. I can only take pain killers to ease pain. I’m wondering if it’s worth trying to apply for PIP does anyone have any advice or success stories from claiming it?

It's always worth trying 2befabat. Ask for advice from the Citizen's Advice, they will help you with the forms too. When filling the forms in, say everything as it is on your worst day ever and don't pull any punches. I asked for a home visit for my face to face and have a relative or close friend with you. Don't do anything yourself (such as make tea etc. And if they ask you to do something that causes pain, say so and don't do it. Very best of luck. XXX

Firstly it is not about the condition but how the condition affects you. My advice would be keep a diary for a couple of weeks. Noting the problems you have and what help you need due to this. Try and get any consultant letters to support your application or physiotherapy occupational therapy reports. Does your arthritis affect other areas of your body? My advice would be to download the PIP descriptors and points criteria. This may help you decide.

The one thing we can do is as you undoubtedly will have been told is lose weight and exercise. I improved greatly after losing a bit but not easy as it is a vicious circle when pain stops you wanting to exercise. I can’t take aspirin based products but do use ibuprofen externally on knees with paracetamol before going out.n I try and maximise movement and walking when at my best. Hurts but worth it in the end. I discovered those stretchy knee things which wish I had had earlier as they made quite a difference.
