So I had my first appointment yesterday, and I think it went ok. He just went through what CBT is and how it will help me. He said next week we will do some quick breathing to get me to hyperventilate, so he can give me techniques to get over these episodes I keep having (bit worried about that :/) I'm trying to go in with an open mind, but I keep thinking that I need more of a talking therapy, as there is so much stuff that I've never got over from my childhood, and I thin this could be the reason I have this anxiety. He said we will have 6 sessions to begin with, but if they don't work can I go back to my GP and ask for a different kind of therapy?

I think go with the 6 sessions as CBT can give you some good coping strategies but I agree a talking therapy maybe more in line with what you need. Don't be afraid to go back to your doc and keep pushing for the help you need. Iwas fortunate enough to be given CBT during my talking therapy and together they work really well.
Good Luck.
Best Wishes,

Hi JB
Thats a start , well done you !
Give it a chance , you wont loose anything by going , thats for sure & if after you still feel you need some therapy where you can talk through your childhood etc which i can understand , then dont hesitate , go & ask your GP , mean while see how this goes & let us all no as it helps everyone on here been able to share each others experiences !

Hi JB,
I agree with the other posts, but when I had CBT, which was great for me, I did lots of talking, writing and homework.
I am a practising yogi and I knew all about the breathing exercises etc. and to me they have been a life safer.
Hiya I had cbt my councillor didn't do any of the breathing stuff and as you say your anxiety like mine is based in our past that we'd like to talk about but that's not what cbt is about and mine didn't want to go into it and said I seemed to be in control so no need for more sessions 2 nights later big panic attack ended up in AnE I don't think she was much good to be honest but I did get interested in cbt and got books about it went on the net to find out more about it and that helped me more than the sessions did the same with anxiety the more you know about something the better you cope with it I hope things go well for you and wish you the best
