Antibiotic sickness

Hi guys forgive me for the long post :(

On Thursday I began to feel sick right after my breakfast, Friday during the day I was ok until around 10pm, I then noticed an abscess on my left breast which was infected. I immediately phoned nhs 24 and they had a look and reassured me it’s common and gave me antibiotics flucloxicillin, I am probably spelling this wrong. I’ve been taking 500mg 4x daily since Saturday and have felt so violently sick since, I’ve not physically vomited though. I also feel very fatigued and tired more so that usual. Today I woke up and was extremely dizzy on and off all day. I phoned my GP doctor and he just told me to wait until Friday to see if any improvements. Also I phoned NHS 24 again explaining my symptoms and again was advised to wait it out. With health anxiety I can’t help but feel something isn’t right with my body and I’m in a state of panic. I’m not even sure what I’m scared off???? If that makes sense. I feel like my hearts going to stop ( very irrational) I know. Taking medication is a big trigger for me too. Does anyone have any advise? I feel as though I’m getting no where with my doctor or NhS 24, it’s hard to accept something when you have an over whelming feeling something isn’t right with in your body.

Sorry for the long read. Appreciate you all. Thank you in advance xxx

Some antibiotics can cause side effects, including tiredness and nausea. You can tell your pharmacist how you are feeling and see if he thinks your symptoms are from the antibiotics. If so, I would talk to your doctor again and see if you can take a different antibiotic.

Hi

Pretty sure I've had those b4 really didn't like them . Drink plenty of water throughout the day that was the only thing that helped me with them . Get plenty of rest and sleep and the course will soon be finished. Definitely avoid alcohol.

Take care be kind to yourself. Health anxiety with a side order of medication phobia Definitely sucks and I feel your pain

Oh bless you - no fun at all! I am also on Flucloxicillin 4x 500mg per day atm too, for an infected knee. I've taken them before with no problems, but this time round similar to you :( Aches, pains, extreme tiredness, nausea..... my GP sent me for a PCR test today because apparently those can also be Omicron symptoms?? Although on the info sheet they are listed as possible side effects. Def it makes a difference to me if I dont stick to the 2 hours after food/1 hour before food rule, but tbh I've stopped taking them after 5 days..... cant deal with the feelings!! Would suggest trying to speak to your GP.... hope you feel better soon xxx

Hey! I’ve done 8 covid tests since Friday as I was SOOOO worried about that. I called my GP today and he stopped me taking them, said I could be allergic!!!!!! The sickness has subsided but I’m left with this awful dizziness possibly my anxiety though, I’m on hold to NhS24 as we speak :( xxxxxx

I'm so glad you got through to the GP and you're not taking them any more - def sounds like you have a sensitivity to something in them :( I'm 24 hours in after stopping mine, and I do feel different!

Anxiety is such a wierd thing isnt it? I have health anxiety too, but it's more specifically phobia about actually feeling/being sick - so the minute I take a new medication I'm on proper high alert to how my body feels - and that affects my tummy anyway 🤦‍♀️!!!

Hope you got some answers about the dizziness and you have a more peaceful day today xxx

This is a penicillin based antibiotic, which is used against bacteria which are resistant to most penicillin derivatives. If this was tested, then you might be restricted to the type of antibiotic available, but there are other broad spectrum antibiotics (cephalosporins, quinolones, etc) which might do the trick.

The dose seems to be at the high end, so you could ask your GP if you could halve it. I find I’m often prescribed the highest dose of something, when a lower dose might be quite adequate.

Hope you find a solution - it’s unpleasant enough being ill, without the “cure” making you feel worse!

If the antibiotics are making you sick, you need to have your doctor prescribe you something else. The antibiotic you listed is similar I think to penicillin and amoxicillin. Which I am allergic to myself. Antibiotics can do a lot of weird things to your body and my body is so sensitive to medicine that it’s really hard for me to find one that I can even take. Your doctor should have offered another alternative if the medicine is making you sick. If you’re taking 500 mg four times a day, that’s a very large dose of antibiotics. It’s not surprising that it would make you feel ill.

Bless you 😔 I hope you’re feeling better now. I totally know how you feel. I’m allergic to penicillin and needed to have an alternative medicine. A week after having my flu jab I’m still not well the dr gave me clarithromycin for a throat and sinus infection. I’m on day 2 of the medication and I am physically shaking, because I’m imagining I’m having every side effect, even though so far I’ve got a horrible taste in my mouth, acid reflux and tummy pain. I haven’t slept, so that’s now affecting my chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Heath anxiety is the pits i wish I wasn’t like this. I hope you have someone to support you. Sending you gentle hugs and wishing you a speedy recovery
