Does anybody here have agoraphobia or your panic disorder is triggered from being in rural areas? My job requires me too live in a small town (less than 1000) which is roughly 85 miles from a larger town of maybe 10,000. Where I live there really isn’t a hospital, but a “clinic”, which really not set up for emergencies, it’s more like cold, sprains etc. Not even the caliber of an urgent care.

These factors contribute to me not wanting to go there/be there and I have panic attacks when I have to. I feel trapped/isolated and am worried that if there is a medical emergency, then I am essentially screwed. Where I grew up and my family lives is 500 miles away and view this as my “safe zone” I honestly don’t like leaving my “safe zone” and have burned all my leave to avoid having to go back. I am currently on leave without pay. I have request a temporary transfer so that I could continue treatment with my provider that is within my “safe zone”. My hopes is that after a few more months of treatment and while actually getting paid, then I can return to my permanent location. Thanks for any response.

I have agoraphobia and it is definitely triggered by being in rural areas. I live in the country as I always have because I have horses and i rodeo, etc. it’s my happy place! And I’ve tried so hard not to let my anxiety take that away from me. The nearest hospital takes about 20-30 mins to get to from my house. I am also pregnant (31 weeks) so that has made the health anxiety skyrocket with all these new symptoms and I just spent 4 hours in the ER yesterday thinking something was wrong with my heart to find out everything’s fine. Everytime I go to the snow up in the mtns or out on the ranch in our hills if I’m the least bit anxious it triggers the agoraphobia. You are NOT alone and I’ve been struggling w this for years now. Talking to myself in the mirror telling anxiety it cannot control me anymore, that it doesn’t own me and I won’t let it ruin my life, steal my happiness, etc. Meditation REALLY helps, I use lavender essential oil to inhale, I do one thing a day that makes me laugh/smile, etc. hang in there.

Oh my goodness, yes and I feel like I’m out of my body just even thinking about it! It’s so scary! I just want to feel normal and healthy! I’m so anxious and nervous. Not a good way to live I hate this :( so so much!
