Trigger for health anxiety, GAD, agoraphobia.

I’ve had anxiety for over 40 years and for the most it has ruled my life.

The consequences now is that I have high blood pressure, am on statins for high cholesterol and have frequent ectopic beats.

Most of this is my own doing as I do little exercise as I’m agoraphobic. Although, I work, look after my grandchildren I wouldn’t say I’m inactive, neither have a bad diet.

A couple of years ago I had to have an operation that I very nearly refused because of the fear of hospitals and being without my family. I arranged that one of them could be by my side at all times...extreme to say the least. I was so very lucky the hospital allowed this.

When I saw a cardiologist a year ago he said there were other tests he could put me through but these would make me feel uncomfortable and I believe this was aimed at my anxiety.

I believe I may need treatment but can’t contemplate the consequences.

I’m struggling currently, my GP suggested upping the beta blockers and taking regularly and increased sertraline to 150mg.

Has anyone on here experienced such a long term GAD and suffered other health issues as a result?

Thank you and apologies if this has triggered any worries for some of you x

Sorry to hear about your situation. I gave up with any SSRI's long ago for my anxiety and depression. They just don't work for me. The only anti depressant that works somewhat for me is Mirtazapine - it also is prescribed for anxiety and sleep issues. Everyone is different of course. I don't see the point of beta blockers at all other than helping to slow your heart rate. It certainly doesn't help reduce anxiety. Not for me anyway. More exercise is probably going to help even if it's at home although joining a group could be very beneficial as there's also a social aspect to it. I hope you feel better soon. I have found that being proactive with your GP is important. If a particular drug is not helping you you need to be very clear about it. What's the point in increasing the dose if its already not helping? Good luck.
