Worried tonight.

Really worried now. I’m a sufferer of kidney stones and I’m struggling to pass urine at the moment. It’s dribbling out but I’m worried if I go sleep something maybe blocked and I’ll die.

I second the first reply. “Never Make Your Own Diagnosis of a Stone” - page 40 of No More Kidney Stones by John S. Rodman, M.D., etc. Call your physician!

Really a whole book on them? Might have to get that. I’m in the hospital now!

If you don’t have a urine strainer ask for one if you do not already know the composition of past stones. Identifying the type of any stone passed can help with future prevention measures.

You are in a lot of company, the soldiers I’ve read that where sent to desert like countries developed a higher incidence of kidney stones. I have also read doctors have been seeing kidney stones in more younger patients now, because of all the heavily processed salted food these days.

I have been struggling to drink more water too. I am trying to develop the habit of bringing a water bottle everywhere I travel. You are young enough to form & greatly benefit from developing good habits!

Ecg was ok. They found blood in urine so I have to go for scan tomorrow.

I had frank blood in my urine too when younger. Testing found no explanation. The bleeding occurred under the stress of purchasing a house & moving into it. The expense had curtailed my usual hobbies.

Sleep well, age is on your side they will not find anything too troublesome.

Not sure if this is me being ultra aware tonight but my body is doing all sorts. Stomach is gurgling. Not a good night for me tonight.

Have faith Sandy, it is likely the setting getting the best of your stomach. Hospitals are enough to give anyone “stress reactions.” You will be OK, I guarantee it.

Add: Just be entirely honest with what you drink, what medication, herbs you take, what you smoke, don’t hold back from the doctors, & you won’t run into trouble.

3mm stone located. Says it’s in the lower part so assume it’s nearer to coming out? Said I just have to wait for it to pass. Kidney function is perfect as is heart. Just this stone. Naproxen and Cocodamol to help?

My current Mayo Clinic Family Health Book (2018) says “You may be able to move a stone through your urinary tract simply by drinking plenty of water — as much as 2 to 3 quarts a day — and by staying physically active. Passing a small stone can cause some discomfort. Pain relievers may help to relieve mild pain.”

Be sure & try to catch your stone by straining all your urine so you can tell what substance(s) it is made of. According to the Mayo Clinic two-thirds of patients seen with recurring stones stopped making them with basic dietary advice. Your dietary advice can be fine turned by knowledge of what your stone is composed of.

Rodman’s book (I mentioned earlier) says “Many of my female patients have psychological barriers regarding urination. And their decision to restrict fluids is often unconscious.”

Should you be worried about the medications the doctor prescribed, drink more fluid. A noted urologist once told me “You can take the medication (vitamin C we were discussing) if you want just drink (a lot) more water.” Hydration is key provided of course your doctor has not set parameters.

Three days now. I feel as if this is never going to pass. I’ve had the urge to pee for three days now. Not fun. Drinking water and forcing my pee out and no sign of it yet :(

Three days is a charm, I have my fingers crossed for you. I passed a stone of some sort a day after having a initial physical therapy evaluation for right flank pain. The evaluation was top notch, very thorough. They put me in so many different positions it must have loosened the stone up some how.

Try reducing the oxalate content in your meals to give your kidneys a little break. The high oxalate foods to avoid are spinach, rhubarb, beets, nuts, chocolate, tea, & wheat bran. The dietary oxalate load from consuming tea can be considerably according to Dr. Rodman (in his book No More Kidney Stones).

When I really started having right flank pain I was unable to sleep much at night for months on end). I went on a low oxalate meal plan & within two weeks I no longer had any pain.

According to the Mayo Clinic the lowest amounts of oxalate are usually found in meats, eggs, dairy products, & white products — bread, rice & pasta. Most beans are high in oxalate as are nuts & many soy (bean) products. Potatoes (sweet, russet or white) are high.

Having too much oxalate in your urine can cause kidney stones. A diet high in fluid, low in fat & low in oxalate is recommended to reduce risk of developing kidney stones. If you have gout you will need to be careful on that front as well.

My father drank copious amounts of water the majority of his life & I believe that this was the secret to his longevity. He lived to be 91, not bad for a WWII veteran. He had a reduced bladder capacity for much of his life necessitating frequent urination.

Hopefully your situation will be comparatively short lived. I do think if you can take to this drinking water frequently the payoff will be living to a ripe old age, & minimizing the chance of further stones as a bonus too.

I have further read that a positive association between total animal consumption & new kidney stone formation occurs in men but not in woman. So you may want read up on this before going heavy on any particular protein source. My books are dated, hopefully new research has come to light.

You will be very great full later if you do manage to capture your stone & send it for lab identification. Doctors never argue with solid iron clad proof, & you will know precisely how to adjust your meal plans accordingly in the future. Hang in there!

I've had kidney stones, did they offer you a stint? That's a procedure that keeps the tube open so the stone can pass. Or they can break the stone up?

Hope you have passed your stone by now Sandy! Please keep us updated. I have had them since I was 17 (now 58). Family history. Force fluids, especially water. Best thing you can do. Take pain meds if needed. Strain your urine - you don’t want to miss this little jewel. You can do it! If too painful and doesn’t budge, ask about a stint to hold your ureter open & aid a bit in passing it. Patience & lots of fluids! You’re going to be okay. Know it hurts something awful but you’ve got this! Praying for you.
