Experienced of starting with betaine hcl for acid reflux/heartburn

Hi, I have acid reflux for years, been on and off PPIs but I’m just sick of it. I’m only 29 so I’m trying to cure myself. I did bicarbonate test and didn’t burp for 8 or so minutes. Even then it was like little bubbles in throat not a proper burp. Anyway, I did a lot of research online about low stomach acid and heartburn, I bought and began using betaine hcl with meals 2 days ago.

In the morning before my pills arrived I had eggs on toast and got terrible heartburn 2 or so hours after. Then pills arrived. Started with 1 pill and another half way through lunch because I’d seen mixed reviews about starting with one and better results with 2. I’m prepared for a period of trial and error.

This was fine I didn’t get any heart burn. My meal was mashed potatoes, grilled plain chicken and gravy, which I chewed heavily and ate very slowly. I did the same thing again for evening meal. No issues. Yesterday I woke up and had eggs on toast again with 2 tablets. (I’m using the brand Now) suffered very slightly, unsure if it was the eggs again or that I needed more tablets. I had mackerel for lunch yday with 2 tablets which was fine. Tuna wrap for tea with 2 tablets which was agony, resulted in heartburn and choking throat feeling most of the night. Unsure if yday breakfast was triggered by eggs or that I needed more tablets So tried again this morning with 3 tablets, and im in pain with heartburn. So not sure what that means?

Can anyone share their trial and error with starting betaine hcl with meals and how it affected their heartburn/acid reflux. It’s giving me terrible anxiety and I just want to feel like a normal 29 year old. I don’t drink or smoke or eat badly.

Hi,

I think it could be the eggs. Dairy, meat & eggs can really wreak havok on your digestive system as thousands of studies and testimonials show. Id recommend stopping betaine for the time being and trying a more plant based diet. From there you can supplement betaine if you're having trouble digesting some of the more difficult to digest foods like legumes and beans. Limiting fat is also important!
