Hi there I have really bad anxiety about going out and also being in the car I’m always worried it’s going to make me unwell so I constantly feel unwell as I let my mind get to me , does anyone have any tips or tricks to help with car journeys and symptoms? Anything is appreciated :)

I have a cd for in my car that I put on with all my favourite songs so I can sing along and enjoy the journey instead of being anxious about it! It takes your mind off things. I also put the air con on a bit cold and point it at my face so I don’t burn up and start letting my symptoms get the better of me! I hope this helps for you x

Yeah I think maybe I’ll try that my mind tends to go into overdrive of thoughts which I think causes me to feel physically worse ! I always have the window open too. Thankyou for the tips! Xx

Yes, music definitely helps or just talking and keeping your mind occupied.

Books on tape are helpful in getting my mind off of driving. Driving is a major trigger for anxiety for me too.

Thankyou appreciate the tips. I’ve got a 50minuet journey tomorrow and I just get so upset because I get physically symptoms I never had a problem with travelling before so I think it’s my mind playing with me , as usual x

Hi Mariapalmer, Until I felt more comfortable driving, I used a relaxation tape that included deep breathing. Make sure it is not one that makes you drowsy. Just a calming voice guiding you through each mile will help make the journey easier. Deep breathing will stabilize your thoughts and body calming you (but not making you sleepy) to a more relaxed body position. Breathe xx

Wishing you well tomorrow, let us know how you do. We are always just a message away :)

Hi I have an audiobook to pick up at the library to help me with the driving anxiety. I think the more I realize it makes no sense to be anxious while driving the more anxious I become, if that makes sense to you!? I shallow breathe, not so much but enough to get me feeling uneasy. I haven't been to my cottage only an hour and a half away in more than 2 months cause of this. We're doing it to ourselves but yet is so hard to change our thoughts. Ahhhh so frustrating.

Just wanted to add that maybe knowing you have these responses with the same problem will help you. You will do it!!

I’m not the one driving I think that’s what makes it harder as I’m not concentrating on doing anything , I’ll try the breathing though ! Yes it’s awful our own minds are controlling awful feelings/thoughts xx

Better yet that you are not the one driving. Then by all means besides the deep breathing bring along a CD/tape of deep hypnosis type relaxation. If your phone allows you to go to YouTube, tune into an hour long Self hypnosis that will calm you down. xx
