Tmj has any one had it If so any home treatments for it ?
I have it through an accident. It kills !!. I just use Magnesium and pain killers.
Good luck with the mouth guard.
I also have it, but a mild case. My dentist said applications of heat to entire jaw and cheek area. Also he said to try to relax my jaw. Before this I was biting every 10 minutes to check how my jaw was doing. It has improved a bit, but is apparently not so easy to treat.
Really don't know what you can do in the short term other than alternating heat with ice as you would any hurting joint.
Long term relief sometimes depends on the cause of your TMJ. You ask for tips about easing your TMJ pain until you get your bite guard, but having a bite guard may not stop all your pain. Has your orthodontist talked with you about that?
Know some people who didn't get much long term relief from a fitted bite guard alone.
I learned a bite guard may not counteract a number of conditions causing TMJ issues....The shape of your jaw, the amount of an over-bite, the formation of your TMJ (does your jaw make a popping noise or feeling when you chew...possible indication that you are slowly wearing out your TMJ), if you grind your teeth, if you tend to chew more on one side of your mouth, if you chew gum (don't do that), an accident affecting your TMJ, etc.
I have a rather expensive bit guard that has lasted over 20 years, wear it to bed at night. It is to protect my TMJ and my teeth from damage due to grinding in my sleep. I have no pain. But some aggressive preventive measures were taken before I had pain. (You could sometimes hear popping when I ate popcorn) My TMJ is in good shape now, no pain, no popping, have caps on my upper front two teeth to protect them.
In my early 30s braces were put on my teeth to reposition them for where they should be after surgery was done to slightly reposition my jaw. My teeth were not crooked. Had a slight over bite, but actual formation of my TMJ was causing it slowly wear out as well my front two upper teeth.
I really hope your bite guard helps you, but since you didn't mention what caused your TMJ pain or why the bite guard would relieve it, thought you might want to know if it doesn't.
HearYou, good advice for TMJ. I once wore a night guard for a year or so and it helped with my tension headaches.
How are things going? Still on the ship? Can't wait until you back on land.
Take care, wishing you well. xx
Hello Agora.
We are safe, but still at sea. Not certain how much damage is to our home. We are "refugees" I gess at the moment. When Port Canaveral finally opened, no hotel rooms available, traffic was very bad, and not safe to drive across state due to the debris Hurricane Irma caused. So the Captain had us stay on board for a five day cruise back to Cozumel, Mexico, hoping by the time we are back at Port Canaveral auto travel to Tampa would be safe. Many of the Caribbean islands and countries are in horrible conditions. Thank you and all of England, as I saw there is a campaign there among all the relief efforts to try to aid the people. I would not have believed the devistation if I haven't seen it. You take care, and always good to"hear" from you. xoxo
