My CBT therapist and I were laughing at comedian Chris Farley’s Saturday Night Live portrayal of a counselor that “Lives in a Van, down by the river”. The therapist said to recognize my ‘down by the river’ (DBTR) thoughts as catastrophic thinking and to write down each DBTR thought and it’s opposite, which is usually the real truth. This way I can be my own Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) counselor when I am finished with her as my therapist.
I’ve been doing it and it has really helped me.
I recommend it to anyone in this group when they are suffering and struggling with their own anxiety and depression. It’s really worth a try.
Take care and best wishes 🙂!
