Does anyone have any self-help books, activities, hobbies, or literally anything that has helped with either self-esteem, anxiety, anger issues, or rebuilding relationships? Thanks for any suggestions :)

Hello. Recommendations are best when you have a rough idea of what you're dealing with. If there are specific things you wish to address and you're willing to share them, I'm sure you'll get some decent suggestions.

Hey cashew (obsessed wid ur name), I guess anything involving fixing anxious attachment and building up my non-existent self esteem would be great 😆

I have no suggestions for these two things. Regarding self-esteem, please share anything you find, I'd love to hear how to fix that as well 😓

Hi 2Scared! If you go to YouToub and type in “Guided meditation for…” you’ll find many helpful ideas for changing thoughts.

Hi 2Scared. I’ve listed the books that I have found the most helpful to me are (in no certain order):

Gabor Mate; Scattered Minds - He speaks to ADD but I found that most of what he covers can be applied to other problems. He explains the human experience from a biological to physiological to behavioural in a very basic, easy to understand format that directly relates to personal development and relationships.

Stan Tatkin; We Do, Wired For Love, and In Each Other’s Care are three books that Tatkin offers new ways to look at relationships and our commitments to them. His use of a virtual “Couple Bubble” and his very realistic approaches to choosing and maintaining long term relationships utilizing introspection, empathy, negotiation, joint efforts, and respect.

Shel Silverstein; The Missing Piece Meets The Big ‘O’ - This book elucidates the need for independence as well as interdependence in our relationships. It’s a kids book but it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. Silverstein has a way of explaining very profound perspectives in a way that even a child can understand.

Lindsay Gibson; Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents - Lots of eye openers in this book. Gibson was able to put into perspective the specific effects that specific types of parenting can have on a child both in the present and long term. She breaks down the different personality types into categories that may have a lot of overlap.

Chapman & Gratz; The Borderline Personality Disorder Survival Guide - The authors introduce readers to the various characteristics of BPD, myths, truths, and causes, and various medications that can assist in treatment if needed. They also go over a number of concomitant disorders such as various anxiety disorders, panic disorders, eating disorders, bi-polar, and PTSD. The book is full of basic but very useful information.

Robert Sapolsky; Behave and Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers - Sapolsky gives a more in-depth look at human behaviour through inter-related influences. He gives a great explanation for the twinkie defense used in the trial of Dan White for the assassination of Harvey Milk and George Moscone if you’re interested. He’s got some really good videos on Depression, Stress, and a slew of other disorders. I have not read Behave in full yet but what I have read is really very interesting and helped me to understand myself much better than before reading it.

John Bradshaw has written many books and has aired many videos on Family dynamics, relationships, and shame. I did a couple of weekend intensives with John when he was in Toronto covering his TV series 'Healing The Shame That Binds Us’. That was back in the 90s, but I just rewatched his series on YouTube a few months ago and it’s still just as powerful and helpful as it was 30 years ago.

I just purchased 'No Bad Parts' by Richard Schwartz and 'Recovery from Gaslighting and Narcissistic Abuse, Codependency and Complex PTSD’ by Don Barlow. I’m not a power reader so this should keep me going for a few months.

Hope this helps

Harry
