I just went through the same process. I didn’t realize how overwhelming it could be. I use my breathing techniques and remember to not “future trip” it’s easier said than done I know. But it does help.

Why is that

Because I don't like thinking about my past or even talking about it

From what u see, some phyciatrist tend to want to put u on tons of mind altering drugs, don't except that you want to feel normal not like a zombie. I opt for the smallest dose of lorazapam, Valium. That way your not going to get addicted. I refuse to take a SSRI , they are addictive and take a long time to taper off. I have known people to committ suicide on SSRI. Just my opinion.

Talking to someone is a good thing, if your not comfortable with your therapist then move on. You have to feel comfortable with them. What they say back to you is important. I never go back to my childhood, that way I'm not in therapy for years catching up on whats going on for years

Start out talking about what is going on in your life today.

The the childhood trauma is part of the reason I have issues in my life today.

I've been on anti depressants since I was 15 plus my ADHD meds. I don't know what normal is

You have to stop dwelling on your past..start dwelling on the future. Dwelling on your past (which you can't go back and change) doesn't help anyone move forward just keeps you stuck.

Hi Valentina. I glanced at some of your previous posts and you are young to have had so many health problems.

I have found it useful to go back and analyse my past - it was so confusing for me but think I've worked it all out. Still a few surprises in store for me though I'm sure!

Everyone is different though. I don't dwell in the past but reflect on how it's affected me.

I agree with you when you say you don't know what normal is. Same for me! Maybe I'm reaching a stage now when I'm resembling it as best as I know!

How did the appointment go today?

Wishing you all the best.

It wasn't too bad, it was mostly getting to know me I mainly just talked about my family.

The psychiatrist said today that as I'm a history teacher, I should remember to look at the past and learn from it. I'm sure she'll go into my childhood trauma eventually and I'll have to face it.

Well done! Your psychiatrist sounds good.I enjoy history and found for myself that taking the long view helped understand why and how things happened in my past. It didn't take the pain away but that there were possible reasons and wasn't completely random.

I read somewhere about adopting the white lab coat approach ie the historians metaphorical outfit (whatever that is!) and studying your past like you would for an article or lesson presentation in your case. For me that put some distance.

I also read that doing a timeliness helps, I found this useful.

Good luck for your nest appt.

I have found therapy to be so effective. Yes it’s hard but you learn the skills to process on the smaller things so when you get to the bigger, deeper childhood traumas you are able to cope. It’s self paced and there is no hurry to get there. I find CBT to be an amazing process. All of a sudden it’s like your brain just gets it and you don’t really know how you got there. Stick with it.
