longterm therapy

I'm trying to deal with sideeffects from ongoing psychotherapy. dont get me wrong, having weekly contact with my doctor has saved me from myself. my doctor is a psychiatrist that handles my medication and weekly therapy. having this level of support kept me from another hospital admission.

the other side of this many years of mental health care sometimes scares off doctors. there were couple doctors who didnt want to treat me because of the hospital admissions. this was the first reality that finding another doctor (my doctor is retiring) for therapy isn't going to be as straight forward as first thought.

I'm going to try is see if finding a place online to talk would help. thus the reason for being here

Can your doctor recommend someone else? If you could get a referral from a doctor or your health insurance company, that might make it easier to find someone else. Or could you find another psychiatrist for meds and a therpist for therapy? Good luck. The last thing we need is to lose a professional who has helped us for years.

a rec from your doctor seems the most promising. If you have been with that doctor for a while a new doctor should see the improvements. I don’t think there are too many young professionals that do both meds and therapy. If your meds are pretty stable you could see an MH PA for meds and someone else focused on therapy. I had a PA that was amazing for meds

I think it's awesome that you are trying to find other outlets to help you. I do think linking up with a therapist will be really good. It's hard to find a psych dr who will also provide therapy. I worked in an outpatient facility and we had several therapists and caseworkers. The psych dr would see patients monthly to follow up on meds and make sure everything was going good. It sounds like you may have a more intensive need right now and I would look into maybe another psych that specializes like your dr does right now. Your Dr may have some recommendations for other doctors that still practice like they do.

I hope you're doctor is able to provide you a referral. Therapists can sometimes judge a situation based on what's on paper, but never forget you're a human being. It's OK to have feelings about it and this online platform is safe.

I am in the same predicament. My Psychiatrist is retiring....he is giving us 6 months notice and trying to match everyone. At the same time, I am doing 3 different consults to see who I like the best. I feel that the connection must be strong. Similar to you, I talk weekly with my doctor and sometimes it's just about the boring stuff. If you feel put off, then it won't work. I tried a lot online places and really struggled. Instead I do Telehealth visits with these new providers even though they are just down the road. I basically want to ensure I don't have slippage.

It is unusual to find a psychiatrist who also does real psychotherapy. Usually they provide medication and a psychologist or social worker does the therapy. While you may need medication, I would focus more on trying to find a therapist whom you can see on a regular basis.

Therapy shouldn't take years. Ideally, can you go to therapy for a while and then when you have learned what you need to learn and have a better understanding of yourself I know more accepting, then you can stop the therapy. You may want to go back for an occasional refresher, but I don't think it should go on for years. Even Freud finished up with most of his patients in six months.

I think your idea of using a teletherapist is a good one. Once you get things set up, the therapist is available to you easily and quickly, and this type of therapy generally cost less than in-person therapy. I am a little wary of getting referrals from one therapist to another therapist because they often pick other therapist they are close to or therapists they don't really know much about. I think the best way to find a good therapist is to get a referral from someone who has seen that therapist.

Finally, I would suggest getting a copy of the book Feeling Great by David Burns and learning about CBT so that you can understand it and apply it to yourself and do therapy for yourself. The idea is to learn how to rethink things so that you can take care of yourself in the future.
