I am currently on 10mg of citalopram and struggling. My anxiety is heightened, feel so nauseous and the heartburn is horrendous. Feel so helpless and fearing these effects will never subside. I have taken sertraline in the past but the start up process was brutal and took me to a very dark place hence why I chose another tablet. Any reassurance or advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.

"My anxiety is heightened, feel so nauseous and the heartburn is horrendous. Feel so helpless and fearing these effects will never subside."
Nausea is the most common with that pill. I have a friend of mine that has been on that pill for years, but still can't eat 2-3 things. (but they are obscure junk food products anyway, so maybe it's a good thing)
With the rest, you want to keep your psych informed on what is going on. He/She may have an OTC (over the counter) suggestion for the heartburn, and what is going on with the anxiety.
.
Hopefully all the side effects will get better soon.
"how were you on them? Did the side effects last long for you? "
I kinda explained this, but deleted the post immediately afterwards.
Why? Well simple. Everybody is different. (and my situation was extreme)
.
Alright.. I'll try to say what I originally posted.
I was on apx. 15-20 meds (no joke), before I am on what I am on now.
.
Again.. My situation is extreme.
I had a psych back then that was not good for me. He was aggressive, and sometimes liked to stack meds. (so you couldn't figure out what med was causing the problem when he was stacking them)
I had a very impatient ex-GF of 5 years that was putting more pressure on me.
I had my family that kept telling me to flush the meds, and that I didn't need them.
Plus I'm med sensitive to side effects.
So again.. My situation is extreme.
.
But I was in a traditional sit down support group for apx 20 years.
I've seen people go on one med, and boom! they were fixed with just that one med. (and yes I was very jealous of them)
But.. The support group that I was in taught me a lot. Both with meds and life. (and this group is also teaching me a lot)
Back then I used to question why I was going through all of that, but I now know it is (partly due) to me being able to "sometimes" help others.
.
Bottom line - Everybody's situation is different. We all have different body chemistry's. What works for one person may not work for another, and what I went through is not the norm.
However.. I can say that I know what you are going through, keep your psych involved on what is going on, and I wish you nothing but the best.
Sometimes you need to place a phone call, and just ask him/her about your sides, what's going on, and if there is any over the counter stuff that you can take. (try to keep the call short)
You may get the, "You need to be patient" response, or he/she may tell you to go up or down on your dosage, (whatever you do, listen to your doc, and don't make any changes on your own) but I would also recommend scheduling appointments as close together as possible. (until you find the right med combo)
It normally takes two to three weeks for meds to start taking affect and making a noticeable difference and it's more than likely your anxiety that is making you blow things out of proportion which is common. The paradox is that the more anxious you are the more it will perpetuate the anxiety so try to relax and give the med time to work. The other thing I have found is to take the meds on your stomach with some food in it and then drink hot coffee afterward to help dissolve them.
