Twitching knees

Hello everyone,

I have suffered from Health Anxiety since I was about 13 years old. It has ebbed and flowed and I'm now 48. My most recent worry is about my knees and the symptoms around them. About early June we went on vacation and did a large amount of walking for a week. While we were there i remember both of my knees hurting. About a week after we returned i was sitting on my bed and the muscle in my thigh started twitching. I should also mention i do strenghth training 2 days a week and i had recently restarted after about a month off. Anyway this went on for a about 5 days. I ended up going to the Dr. Because i was worried I had ALS. He said i strained a muscle. About a week after that it seemed like my knees would twitch and the pain was still hurting in my knee and the cracked and popped when doing squats or just bending my knees. I certainly have had my share of twitching muscle in my life, I'm just trying to find out why they wont get out of my knees.

So I went back to the Dr. A 2nd time and took my husband. I explained my symptoms and he said my knee looked like it had Pattela tracking disorder, but he was more concerned about getting my anxiety under control,so he switched my meds to Prozac after 10 years on Zoloft. He took xrays and the report showed arthritis. I went a orthopedic dr. Because I wanted to know more about the report. He said it showed mild/moderate arthritis. I also told him that i felt a little tingling on the inside portion of my knee . He said arthritis can cause this. He did say he felt there were problems with my Pattela not lining up properly and gave me knee strenghth exercises.

So i go home and become an over acheiver in the exercises and walking daily. My muscles are strong, but my knees still feel week and i feel some tingling on the inside of my other knee and they both still twitch. I only really feel them twitch when i rest.

I have made an appointment with a Neurologist. My husband is not happy about it, but i need some answers! I'm sorry for the long post, but has anyone ever had any of these symptoms?

I think you are fine and are mainly suffering from health anxiety. Try and do the knee strength exercises and you may find you don't need a neurologist.

A Neurologist was going to be my suggestion, as I have an undiagnosed neurological disorder (feet and legs and sometimes my entire body vibrates - feeling like muscles twitching at the cellular level). Your first doctor being concerened about anxiety is great; however, he/she should have referred you to a Psychiatrist to handle that, IMO. I was on Zoloft YEARS. It worked great. But...long story short, I went through the anti-depressant roller coaster and landed on Prozac for years. It pooped-out. I asked my Psychiatrist to put me on Zoloft again. He did. I have been on it for at least 8 months. I really don't see a difference. My depression and anxiety is the same. Paxil (another SSRI) would be a better medication for anxiety if you go the anti-depressant route. Other suggestions for anxiety: Hydroxyzine (not habit forming) and Klonopin (very habit forming). Gabapentin (Neurontin) helps with my anxiety as well. I don't think it is prescribed for anxiety. However! It IS prescribed for neurological disorders. Mention that medication to your doctor when you go. Hope this helps.

I have arthritis in both knees and both feet, i do strength/weight training and it is very good for them. You need to strengthen the muscles around your knees to support the joints, plus the exercise lubricates the joints using synovial fluid. What you might need to look into is your form while exercising, you might not be doing it right and its causing pain for you. Im a fitness instructor and most people dont squat right until they are shown how to. Try deadlifts as well if you can. For the smaller muscles around your knees look into balancing exercises for the knees. You can get a balance ball that might help also.

Good luck and take care.

I have not had specific knee tingling or the symptoms you describe but amongst other muscle issues, surface tissue pain, and I am fit, it is the restless legs that used to play me up, I suffered with this and widespread pain for years, different parts of the body, only ever prescribed meds for depression and anxiety. No physical damage at all from all tests and investigations.

I finally asked my GP for a psychotherapy appointment, this was the first time in my entire life, despite being prescribed medication for mental health that I recieved my first mental health assessment! and I was top of the scale for both anxiety and depression, bit of a shock.

From here I started therapy with my pschotherapist, different types of therapy, there are many, and this is the best I have ever been in my life, I now feel and this is from reading to better understand, books like 'the body keeps the score' probably the best of its type out there, that meds and therapy is the way to understand and take control. best wishes.
