Overcoming severe depression

I am a older single woman, with 2 grown daughters and 5 grandchildren. I am joining today because I am finding my severe depression is making it impossible to cope with daily life. I moved recently from a small town where I had lived for over 40 years to a small city about 20 minutes away. My life feels very empty right now. I no longer work and have no routine and have been self isolating. Wondering if there are others out there like me and if it might be possible to encourage each other.

Hi there and welcome among friends! We will try to offer our support when and where we can!I'll start: the three things you mention -- not working, having no routine, and self-isolating -- are feeders of depression. Can you maybe make a schedule for yourself? Maybe you can volunteer somewhere? This would bring meaning to your life.

Yes, I relate! I’m 62 and our kids have moved out in the last couple years, my business doesn’t take a lot of time, and I have a hard time making a schedule cause I just don’t care. Who wants to be around a depressed person so self-isolate too. My best friends have now all moved out of state, I’m in SoCal and there has been a mass exodus. Nearly impossible to make friends right now. Still I find friends to text with that helps to just connect. Some days are better. Wish I could offer you better encouragement but you are not alone and many of us understand and care about what you’re going through.

I’m in the same boat. Recently moved, kids grown and gone to live in two different cities that are too expensive for me to live in. Recently divorced and am investing alimony for retirement and am hoping to move closer afterwards. Started working overnight shifts as a caregiver. I use the quiet time to read and take notes on anxiety and depression. Just learning more about them helps and gives me time to process and heal. Taking care of others is what I’ve done my entire adult life so it has helped to continue that and there is a great need for workers in this area right now. Seeing a therapist has helped a lot too. Gotta go. Time to get ready for work. Hope we can all help each other through this.

I am so sorry you are feeling this way. One thing that has helped me have an activity to do and meet new people is volunteer work. I have made some wonderful friends and spent time doing rewarding tasks which improved my mood. I am sorry you are not feeling as best as possible. We are here for you!
