You are seen. You are heard. ((hugs))

White men have the most power in this country and the entire western world. That is a toxic imbalance of power. Maybe you should examine that relationship. I recommend Tim wise to start.

With respect what does having power have to do with a persons mental health struggles? If being in a privileged position equalled no stress anxiety or depression then why do countless rich people and celebrities take their own life's?

The picture is highlighting the suicidal rate of white men. Did you see that? In fact the entire post is about white men. Also this is the third such post I have seen by the same person who is driving the point home in a bunch of comments plus posting on other posts. On one of the others he asked for discussion. I am addressing what this person is asking to be addressed.

"what does having power have to do with a persons mental health" You mean privileged power over the entire economic system in western civilization? Everything if you think you are going to lose it and become marginalized.

"If being in a privileged position equalled no stress anxiety or depression then why do countless rich people and celebrities take their own life's" The sentence is a contradiction. I don't know what you are trying to say here. Heck most people don't see their privileged because being privileged means you don't have to.

"As Jason Houle, PhD, articulated in a report published in Sociological Perspectives, “we often think of suicide as an individual act, but the social and physical environment is really an important determinant of suicide.”5"

[...]

"The states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming constitute a region that has come to be known as the “suicide belt” since sociologist Matt Wray noticed an alarming trend in the early 2000s. This “suicide belt” is disproportionately populated by middle-aged white men who are often socially isolated, unemployed, and have access to guns. Although suicides in these states occur outside of the middle aged white male population, the large concentration of white men in these areas enables data from the suicide belt to provide a useful indication of the risk factors that lead to high rates of white male suicide fatalities. Recent research has found, for example, that residential instability plays a large role in the suicide belt’s elevated suicide rates.5

The high rate of suicide deaths in older white men is most likely a result of a mix of many risk factors that, when combined, can be fatal. The common thread in research surrounding suicide in older white males is evidence of a sense of separation from society. The increasing rates of death by suicide among middle-aged white men, therefore, may indicate broader societal problems such as declining levels of social connectedness, weakened communal institutions, and fracturing along class, cultural, geographic, and educational lines.9 More research is necessary to identify specific risk factors so that public health officials can create more precise modes of suicide prevention. In the meantime, our health institutions must take broader steps to prevent suicide."

This is a very misleading statement as most of the world's population in those countries is white? That's like getting mad that in Asia more Asian's have power then other races. Where is your outrage there? Or like saying that in Latin America the majority of power is in the hands of Latin Americans and not other races. Where is your outrage there? The second problem is your whole reply is a straw man. While it is true the majority of people in power in the west are white, that is still a small minority of the whole population in each country. Most are going to fall under median income, including Black, Latin, and Asian people. But it is also equally true that white people are still the majority of the poor in the US. And I am sure if you look into it they will be the majority of the poor in all western countries as well.

"This elevated risk reflects past and current institutional practices that put blacks and other minorities at a disadvantage. But it’s also true that almost three-quarters of black incomes do not fall below the poverty line."

"The white poverty rate does run much lower than the black rate, just under 10 percent, one-third of the black rate. But the white poor outnumber the black poor considerably, 19 to 7.8 million. White people make up 42 percent of America’s poor, black people about 28 percent."

"The basic numbers don’t change when we look at people living in extreme poverty, in households making less than 50 percent of the meager poverty line. Of the 20 million people who live at this alarming level of want and deprivation, about 42 percent are white, 27 percent black."

So what does all this mean? It means that even if there are white people who are "privileged", that in no way takes away from the fact that there is a very large population of white people who are struggling and suffering that no one cares about. Which this post is talking about. You will lose your mind that the incarceration rate for blacks and Latinos is higher then white people but just blindly ignore the fact that white men are committing suicide at a much higher rate. So you only like or care about imbalance if it supports your views. If it doesn't you don't care at all. And before you label me as another white man, I am not. I am a Latino male. And I have seen first hand how my skin color got me opportunities and help that my poor white friends never had. This whole divide about hating white people is stupid because typically it's not white people that are the problem. It's people who have money who don't want to lose that money that are the problem. You forget that the same arguments you use for us POC's "don't assume they are all the same", "not all blacks are bad" and so on also applies to white people. Are there crazy white people? Of course. Just like there are racist Hispanics and blacks. No culture or race is immune from that. But to assert that one race is completely unworthy of care or mention because some members of that community are toxic and bad seems pretty clearly racist to me.

Wow how triggered are you! I could copy and paste half of Google to support my views just like you did. But to tell you the truth I'm over it. However I will say that my last message started with the words "with respect" and through your endless diatribe you called me racist which is laughable seeing as I live in predominantly black community. Most of my friends are black and I'm engaged to a black woman. But nice try pulling the race card.

Don't know why you messaged me as I was agreeing with you? My message was in response to blue ruth.

Back in February my cousin James shot himself in the head in the calf barn at the farm where he worked and it was a right shock when I heard that!

I'm sorry for your loss Catgirl1976

Thanks for that.

I do feel James has gone to a better place though and he is at peace now.

Glad you're keeping things in perspective instead of getting lost in the "politics" like some others up here are. Farm work is tough, get your hands dirty, kind of work. Sometimes wish I had chosen a more manly job like that. I was always a wuss, scared to get callouses on my hands. Sure wish I had reconsidered. I'm sure there's something beautiful about working on a farm. Surely it has it's stresses too. Wonder if James stress was work-related or "relationship" related.
