“You must be on your period.” “You’re just being hormonal.”
Many of us have heard a variation of these sentences in popular media or perhaps even in our own social circles. Such statements are frequently made about menstruation (i.e., periods) and ovarian hormones to explain why negative emotional experiences, such as anxiety and low mood/depression, are being expressed.
ADAA members, Courtney Louis, MA, Lilianne Gloe, MA, and Jason Moser, PhD, discuss whether or not menstruation or ovarian hormones have an effect on mood, and if so, whether those effects are positive or negative.
Hi this is Shnookie. I’m 63 and read the article. I’m ADHD and bipolar 1 my entire life and didn’t start taking meds til I was 39. All I know was that I had such bad cramps, heavy bleeding in first few days, vomiting and tender breasts that I was miserable for at times at least one week out of the month.
The discomfort made me feel lousy. It didn’t stop me from going to school or work, but the migraine headaches were brutal.
I had to deal with migraine also. Brutal is a great description. I could feel it coming on about 24 hours before. I tried every Med out there until we finally found a shot that worked. I had to inject myself at the first sign.
Many years of it. I'm sorry you had to suffer with that also.
Thank you 🙏 very much. The humorous thing about this was one day at home when I was about 16, I was in a lousy mood and my one of my younger brothers asked me if I HAD MY PERIOD. Looking back it’s totally lol 😂
Also on both sides of my family, history of suffering thru menstruation.
I’m so sorry 😐 that your daughters gets migraines. I can empathize with her. The older I got, the pains decreased but it is hellacious when a woman has hellacious pains due to her period sometimes for a week out of the month.
