Please help!

My daughter has untreated social anxiety and depression. She has not been out of the house alone in a decade. Two years ago, she received a jury summons and has lived in terror ever since. She received another and is in profound distress. Is there any way, if I can get her to a doctor, that I can get her permanently excused? Please help, thanks!

Can you get your daughter to phone her doctor instead. or even email? If not then maybe you could do it for her. If you say she has agoraphobia I can't see why the doctor can't excuse her.

I am more concerned your daughter isn't getting any treatment for her issues. Does she refuse or is it a case of she can't leave the house? Could you go with her to the doctors?

Thanks so much for replying. No, she is not in treatment at all. She doesn't trust anyone and is in absolute terror right now. If I can get her to go to a doctor, hopefully he can help her with this. Again, thanks so much.

You are welcome. The longer she goes without treatment the longer it will take for any recovery as the more damage is done. If she isn't against it then maybe the doctor can work something out for her.

I think it's essential she does get treatment though as what is going to happen to her if anything happens to you? She will be a lot older and more unable to cope. I always remember an old woman I knew a bit whose son was like this. When she eventually passed the son must have been in his 60's and couldn't cope at all and had to be taken to a home. He was terrified of people and always rushed away with a frightened look on his face.

Tough love? Very hard but maybe essential? It's a very difficult situation for you though and I do sympathise.

Thanks, she may be less frightened of the prospect of therapy than she is the prospect of jury duty. Hopefully, this opens the door to getting her better.

Yes she can be permanently excused. Get her to a doctor for a note. If she cant make it to doc ask doc for a Zoom visit. Call the court & ask them what they need to excuse her. They don't want people in distress sitting in the jury box. A defendent can get a mistrial if the court forces a troubled person to sit on jury.

Thank you so much!

I have severe anxiety and I got summoned for jury duty also and I just wrote them and explained that I have severe anxiety and there is no way I could do it.. I did tell them if they needed to call my Dr. to verify they could but I really don’t think they did. I’m in Canada so it could be different where you are.

P.s. My bf also got summoned and I wrote a letter for him saying he can’t risk losing his job as he was the only one working and explained my health issues and he also didn’t have to go.

I just want to echo that she needs treatment ASAP. I had some very severe anxiety which caused terror that didn't stop. Lasted most of a year. It was brought on by a traumatic event, and I've always had an anxiety disorder. This was well beyond that. I worked with a psychiatrist and it took a while, but I found a medication that brought me back. Therapy would be great of course. Now I'm sure you can find someone who does Zoom or try online therapy. I really feel for your dayghter. You too. I have a son with severe anxiety disorders. ❤️
