How can there be guilt around insomnia? Well, I’m Exhilbit A. Breathing is a basic human function. Eating is another. Sleeping is yet another....and I can’t seem to do that “right”. The fact that I’m trying so hard to resolve this insomnia is almost certainly causing it to continue. It doesn’t help to know how incredibly essential 7 hours of sleep is when I get 5. What am I doing wrong? One thing is thinking about the problem in those terms. I’m blaming myself for something that has nothing to do with blame. I’m starting to think that embracing the situation rather than lamenting it may paradoxically be the path out. So bring it on. If I toss and turn a little or if sometimes I am awake in the night so what? I’ll read a little and get back to sleep whenever I do. What approaches do any of you with insomnia take to deal with the situation? It can be exhausting, but worrying about is far more so.

Try writing or reading something educational or light. Taking a piece or two of fruit helps. Rubbing legs or arms. Falling asleep or being more mellow listening to music. Wrapping the blanket closer.
