Our mind is a survival machine and is always looking for threats. It's built in and has been with us for millennia. Our cognitive center and pre-frontal cortex are rather new to the scene, in evolutionary terms. The threats, however, are no longer tigers and bears: they are late mortgage payments, a hard-nosed boss, our opinions of circumstances and a whole array of other disparate entities.
There isn't a way to stop that from occurring as it is, quite simply, instinct. There are ways, however, to control how we respond. Methods such as ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and others teach us we can accept and be with these thoughts, see them as thoughts (not controlling us) and move on with our lives.
It takes practice and commitment, but can be done.
