Too scared to go to the Doctor

I initially had a consultation over the phone with the doctor (that seems to be how doctor appointments are being conducted where I am right now) about a month ago because I had tingling limbs, back pain, chest pain and headaches etc. The doctor then told me they thought it was anxiety and gave me a number of further help.

However, the tingling now seems to be in my whole body, my right arm keeps tingling and is sore and so are both my hands, and sometimes my legs and ankles as well. This has been very scary and distressing for me and my family has suggested going to the doctor again, but I am now too scared in fear there really is something wrong with me physically... I am too scared and feel like I would rather not know at this point. I know it sounds ridiculous but I can’t help it the idea just terrifies me now.

I keep looking for reassurance that these symptoms are normal/occur with anxiety but the most terrifying things keep coming up when I search them up it’s so scary. I also feel so confused cos these symptoms mostly started when I was just at home back from University relaxing at home? I don’t understand how I could’ve been anxious and even sometimes when these symptoms occur I don’t understand cos I don’t feel particularly scared.

I am trying not to take it too to heart but it seems like the moment I read something once it stays in my mind for DAYSSSS.

I don’t know what to do I feel so helpless

Hi! I agree with your family and I would make another appointment but maybe with a different doctor. I’m assuming you are young since you said you were a college student, so I wouldn’t be too worried that it is something serious. It could be something as simple as acid reflux since several of your symptoms are related to that or it could be a deficiency in your blood. Have them check your blood to see make sure your levels are all within normal range.

Hi Cinephile64489,

The symptoms you are describing are most likely caused by anxiety. Especially if the sensation is intermittent(comes and goes). If the sensation is persistent(stays constant for days) then you need to see a doctor to have tests run.

As for having anxiety out of nowhere, that is also common unfortunately. Anxiety does not follow a schedule or even triggers at times. There is no rhyme or reason for panic attacks or anxiety to come on at times, but it does. The simple definition of anxiety itself is your body triggering a rush of adrenaline that is not needed, and you are left suffering with the symptoms.

In a scary situation when you need protect yourself, these symptoms would help your body either fight off an attack or prepare you to run for your life. However, sitting on your living room couch, these symptoms of elevated heart rate, feeling restless, rapid breathing, and sweating don't really do you much good and tend to freak you out.

Please do not research individual symptoms on the internet. You will always find the worst case scenario for any symptom you search. Period.

Please research Claire Weekes, hope and help for your nerves. She explains each anxiety symptom in detail. She also reminds us that NONE of them will kill us. It is merely our brain playing tricks on us to keep us in a state of worry. We need to accept the symptoms will not harm us, let them do their thing, and let time pass. In time those symptoms will no longer phase you.

Be Well.

Hi Cinephile64489. I agree with Trying1268... I've been there... & understand how scary it can be. The only way you are going to know is by talking to a doctor & going from there. Please don't Dr. Google... it will just make you more anxious.
