Lamictal/Lamotrigine for depression?

Has anyone been prescribed Lamictal for depression? I've been suffering from major depression disorder and anxiety for a year and a half now. Many years ago I was treated for bipolar, which I think was a misdiagnosis. My doctor wants me on 50mg of Lamictal, but when I googled it I couldn't find anything that says it helps with depression. Has anyone had success taking Lamictal for depression? Thank you!

Just keep a close eye on any symptoms. Especially any skin irritation like a rash or hives. I was on lamictal for a year before symptoms started show. I had hives all throughout my body. It was very difficult to deal with and doctors at the E.R. didnt recognize it for what it was. Its call st. John's syndrome and can be fatal. So be careful.

Thank you for your response, Missinglobe.

Yes, I'm on that along with zoloft. This combination did help me with my depression but I'm more anxious than before. Please also keep in mind that it works with everyone differently. So for one person it can relieve your depression somewhat but it might not work for the next. On here too please keep in mind we are not doctors so we can't give medical advice. Please just be careful. By the wa my Dr thought I was bipolar but I'm not yet this combined with my antidepressant makes me feel better. I wish you all the best. Take care ❤

Hi Alice Anne

my name is also Alice and I am perscribed lamictal 100mg. I began on 25mg and gradually upped my dose per my psychiatrist request. I find it works really well for me but I have BPD and Bipolar1 so its actually great for stabilizing my moods and slows my thoughts and now I have less anxiety am more grounded and no negative intrusive or racing thoughts. I am more on the manic side of Bipolar. I actually don't think this is a good perscription for depression because it makes you tired and drowzy. It is one of the more low energy perscriptions in my opinion.

Thank you for replying, Alice.

I was on it years ago, then I developed this huge rash that's serious and now I can't be on it anymore. Also be aware that Lamictal affects your eyesight. And don't always believe these doctors when they say the benefits outweigh the risks.

OK, thank you for the info, Googoodollsfan.

Hello AliceAnne,

I've been taking Lamictal 100 mg twice a day since 2016, I think. I began at 25 mg until I reached 100 mg. I have major depression and BPD, and Lamictal helps as a mood stabilizer. It evens everything out, so to speak.

Do be careful of any skin changes! As others have said, they can be fatal. I've not had any problems at all. I don't find Lamictal sedating; I take my first dose in the morning.

As always, YMMV.

Hi Alice Anne. I'm another on Lamictal as I'm diagnosed with BPD and Bipolar and I'm on it as a mood stabilizer. As been mentioned, we are not doctors and everyone responds differently to medications. It does controls my rage. But I'm on other medicine for depression and anxiety. I can say for myself Lamictal has tamed a lot of my mood disorders. It hasn't cured me but it has helped me. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

Thank you for your reply, Caseopia. I appreciate it!

It got me to see “the door” to the other side. Nothing more. It’s up to you whether you want to go through it though, from my experience.

That’s my view of taking medicine. They get you to a point of “access”. They can only do so much. It’s missing factor is human will and belief.

Something to think about. Hope it helps :)

Much love and best of luck! :)
