Hi there, lovehealingforme! I would love to 'attempt' to help, but realize I am not a professional, so my *serious advice* may not be the best advice... would you care to elaborate on the thought processes and the repetitive actions that are occurring?
Obviously, once you identify the specific problems in your life that are causing the actions and thought cycles, you can start to work toward resolution.
But, the first thing you can do to break the cycle is to distract yourself as soon as you realize that it's happening. Basically, just occupy yourself with doing something, anything, that will pull your negative thoughts away. Do anything you enjoy: for example - reading, watching movies, photography, exercise, talking to friends / family, etc.
Next, you'll probably then have to address the underlying issue(s). What can you identify as the source of your habitual actions and mental distress? Is it guilt for past actions? Maybe it's feelings of worthlessness / self-esteem issue? Maybe it's a chemical imbalance? I think once you have a handle on the 'why' behind it, you can outline a plan to break the cycle. If you don't know what those things are, I think therapy can help you uncover those things. If you already know, that's a great start!
No matter what it is, try not being too hard on yourself. Past mistakes are just that... in the past and you can move past them. Maybe that just requires a specific plan to make sure those mistakes don't happen again. Also, recognize your triggers, whether it's being around certain people or being in certain places or situations - and do what you can to avoid them.
Do you have a support system of friends and family in place? Maybe even a therapist you are already speaking to? These people can assist with not only distracting you from negative thoughts, but help boost your self-esteem and maybe even provide valuable insight about your specific issues. Plus, we're here!
Hopefully, you can pull something from here that helps. Just remember to reach out when you're going through difficult times. Best of luck!
